Need New Tires
Need new tires for my 2008 F-450 dually. Nowhave 225/70R19.5 Continentals and have 60,000 miles on the truck. I pull an18,000lbs 5th wheel. Probably could get another 5,000 miles easily but don'tlike riding on thin rubber.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> What have you guys been replacing your tireswith?<o:p></o:p> |
Sorry......double post.

I just put Cooper Road Master 253's on my F450. I paid $1580 for 6 tires mounted, balanced, disposal and all applicable taxes. I needed tires with better traction than the Conti's. I've only put 50 miles on them so I can't give you a comprehensive review. They are 14 ply tires and have good traction here in the mountains. I only got 36k out of my Conti's.....

I will also need tires for my 08 F450 soon. My front tires (stock conti's) were gone (outside edge worn) in 25,000 miles. I have 4-wheel drive. The cost to replace with decent tires was well over $300 each. I will check out the Cooper's, thanks for the tip. I moved my front tires to the inside rear to get more mileage out of them. None of the rear tires had any appreciable wear.

DesertRider,
Had the same front tire issues (wear on the outside edges) as you did. Ended up replacing the front shocks at around 45,000 miles and then replacing a tie rod on the driver's side at about 50,000. Also, at 50,000 miles moved the tires around as you did because the rears looked good. Inside duallies to the front and fronts to the inside duallies. After all of this and 60,000 miles in, the fronts did not show any outside edge wear. So it appears the new shocks, new tie rod and tire rotation solved the problem of front outside edge wear. So now I'm ready for some new rubber all around. Let me know what tires you go with, thanks. |

I should also mention I took the truck in to the dealer when the front tires were wearing so bad only after 25k miles. They said all was within spec and it must be because I tow a trailer 99% of the time. This, of course, is BS. I checked how much the suspension settled after the trailer was attached, 2.5 inches in back and 1.75 inches in front. I had them do alignment and adjust the camber to the negative end of the spec (about -.5 degree). After about 3k miles, it appears the outside edges of the front are still wearing. I will probably get new shocks but don't see how this could affect outside tire wear. I will also have someone check tie rod ends. Thanks. |
DesertRider,
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o:p></o:p> Let me clarify something, I had the front tiresscalloping around the edges. That is why the shocks were replaced. <o:p></o:p> My truck also squatted 2-1/2" in the rearwhen the RV was hooked up. My pin weight is about 4000 lbs. My hitch is oncenter with the rear axle so very little weight is transferred to the frontaxle and therefore little to no squat of the front. <o:p></o:p> I also added air bags to remove about1-3/4" of rear squat. <o:p></o:p> Hope this additional info helps.<o:p></o:p> |
