E4OD shifts hard when warm
I just rebuilt my E4OD transmission in my 1996 F250 7.3L it has all new clutch packs torque converter and a shift kit. When I first put itback together it would not shift out of second cleaned mlps and shifts threw all the gears now. I took it out on the road to test it and this thing ran great shifted smooth and quick could not askfor any better but when Trans temp gets around 140-150deg it shifts hard and od light flashes. I have ordered a scanner to read the codes but won’t be in till later this week. Any ideas on what I could check in the meantime. Thanks matt ffice:office" /><o:p></o>

Check whatever is setting the code that makes the OD light flash.

I have a 96 f250 with e4od when it's gets to about 19 mph to shift it slams into next gear and shakes and does it again on next gear but doesn't go it till its warm though its a 5.2l v8 4x4

Okay so I got my autoenginuity scan tool in today read the codes said p1728 transmission slip cleared code drove truck home ran good in the beginning then at about 65 and 5min into the drive the rpm started to clime and light flashed stopped and checked again same code. The solenoids seem to operate fine as I was watching the live data. I am not Shure what the speedo input is supposed to be I had the scanner monitoring it and it read 0.00 not moving it read 0.10 in second and 0.20in third and never changed from that point even going into o/d stayed 0.20 and it also seems to shift into o/d at 35/40 mph instead of 45mph the speedo seemsto work fine i am going to take truck out and compare to gps in a bit waswondering if there were any other parameters I should check specifically after the drive I will drop pan andinspect thanks again thanks matt

I don't think this is an electrical problem. I think it is a cracked apply piston in the torque converter clutch. A new torque converter is needed to fix this.

it is a brand new torque converter that i put in there when i rebuilt it i guess i will have to call the store i bought it from. is there any thing else you think it may be even something that i screwed up on the build i had all the books and followed step by step i do fix helicopters for a living so i am fairly competent mechanic. is there a way to check the tq conerter apply piston thanks again Matt

put a pressure gauge on the test port of the trans, temparary run the line up through the shift boot ,check the pressure while driving ,note readings ,???at idle in park ,r,low 1 ,i think you will find the press going to be around 200 psi wich means the trans is in limp mode ,full pressure so you dont do any damage when running the truck this way did you air test the clutch cylinders before you installed the valve body ?this can also be done while the trans is still in the truck ,

one more silly question when going down the road in o/d ss1 ss2 sss3 all read 0 this is correct right thanks matt

i did do all the air checks when i put it back together everything seemed to work as it was suppused to i will go out this afternoon and put a pressure gage on it and get back with the readings

The ONLY way to check the piston is to remove the torque converter, put it in a lathe, and cut it open. |
okay so i am not shure if this helps or not but i had to go to the dump so i cleared the code started the truck and took it out of overdrive it shifted a littel hard from first to second but the rest of the time it was fine so i kept driving about 40 miles no issue with o/d off i am going to hook up gage to it in a few min but probably wont drive it today also going to drop pan and take a look

Okay think I have it figured out and makes sense to me just wanted to see what you guys thought I hooked a wire to tq converter solenoid and grounded it rpm dropped but did not stall ran real good when first drove after rebuilt till it spit code so I thing I pinched seal when I put converter on it held then let go just wanted second opinion before I pull trans back off thanks again matt

Update so i pulled tq converter back out and found that it had pinched input seal on initial installation must have held for a bit then let go thanks again for all the help matt
