2006 Power Steering Whine/Howl

NOOB Alert :-X06

Just picked up a 2006 S-Crew Triton that needs a little TLC. The thing that is bugging me the most is the power steering pump whine/howl. I know this is a typical symptom of the older Fords, but has anyone had luck with any of the replacement brands to eliminate the whine? I tried the friction modifier, and if anything, it got worse.

OK, I would do a flush and fill before buying a new ps pump. spend the extra $ and buy the synthetic oil and see if the whine goes away. Its a lot cheaper fix than a new pump. If that isn't the fix, then replace.

Also, the friction modifier goes in the differential oil not the power steering oil.that's probably why it got worse

I have read several posts recommending adding a bit of friction modifier to the PS pump to quiet the sound.
I believe this pump is beyond fixing it with a flush. It sounds like a late 80s Ford. The fluid in it is nice and pink. I don't really want to throw a $30 fluid change at a $60 pump for it not to fix the issue, then have to buy the pump and flush again, putting that new fluid in the waste pan.

Are you 100 percent sure its the ps pump? I would but a stethiscope on it, they are cheap, maybe five-ten bucks. Mine sounded just like that and it was the idler pulley bearings. If it's the ps pump buy a ford one not an aftermarket
