'02 7.3L with 105k miles- Newcomer looking for wisdom
 

Hey all,

My dad recently handed down to my our '02 F-350 7.3L with 105k miles, and I want to keep this thing running strong for as long as I possibly can.
The truck has been babied for most of its life...never towing more than 10,000 lbs or so.
It has an exhaust, cold-air intake and a 6-set chip...either of the makes I'm not sure of.

Anyways, I know the diesel is reputed with its durability (especially the 7.3) but I'd like to gather some knowledge of when I should do maintenance. At what mileage should I check what, etc...
We just had it looked at when it hit the 100k mile mark, and said it was in marvelous shape.

these trucks will run forever with proper treatment. at 105k miles, you are just broke in. there are a lot of trucks here with 250k+ miles on them and still running like new.

I would not agree with item #5 in the list of the first post...
Unplugging the fuel bowl heater may keep the fuse from blowing but that also disables the water in fuel sensor.
I would rather just keep a 30A fuse on hand and know what to do if the heating element does go out and cause the fuse to blow and why.

You are fortunate to have that truck at such low mileage...
Regardless of miles on it... time still takes its toll.
Likely it will be time to freshen up orings in various places and flush fluids if it hasnt been done.

You definitely found the right place.

If you are using the correct oil such as Rotella T, Delo or Motorcraft etc, then you can change your oil every 7000-8000 miles with no worries. Fuel filter every 15k. Check SCA every 12k, Change auto trans fluid every 30-35k, differential fluid every 100k, transfer case fluid every 100k, brake and power steering fluid every 3 years, HPOP hoses every 10 years, serpentine belt every 100k. I've never seen a coolant hose pop on one of these trucks but I change them out every 10 years anyway. :-X22

My OEM water pump lasted almost 1/4 million miles so I replaced it with another Motorcraft unit. I am still running the OEM starter and alternator so if those things ever go out then I'll just have my original units rebuilt vs buying a reman from the local parts houses.
