'96 F150 Transmission/transfer Case Question
 

Hey all,

Recently I took (had it towed...) my truck to a local garage and they basically said they needed to rebuild the transmission because the 3rd (of 3) gears wasn't working at all and that the transfer case is 'getting there'.

Just wondering... How many of y'all have worked/rebuilt a transmission and transfer case? I am not very good with engines but I can't afford to dump another 3600 into my truck for this, and I would love to get my hands on it and try to do it myself. I am talking long-term as I would have to do a lot of research and learning before I even attempted this.

Basically, how difficult is this exactly and do I even stand a chance? How much time would be put into this?

Sounds like they're trying to scam you. Why did you have the truck towed?
Was the T-case working fine before? These things either work or they don't work there is no sorta working, or in other words it's either perfectly fine or it's completely broken and you would know if it was broken.

I was driving along the road and then all of a sudden it had no juice...had to coast to the side of the road and get a tow.

Its an 3 gear automatic, I tried putting it into first and second and nothing happened (i could still rev the engine, it would just go no where). When i put it back into park it didnt actually go into park because the truck could still move. Things are definitely broken, just not sure what to do about it... They want 2200 to replace it with another transmission or 3600 to rebuild it.

well you could have them get a new one if its cheaper or you could go to a junkyard and try to find a low miles one and pull that trans and try it

+1 on scamming you. That's why I fix everything myself except for an alignment or tires... things like that need equipment I don't have. Anything else, I'll fix myself. It may take twice as long without a lift and having to make/buy special tools, but it's half the price and I know it was done right.

You say park wouldn't hold? I'd take the truck home, pull the transfer case, set it on the ground and turn the input shaft while shifting thru the gear ranges. The output shaft should rotate with the input shaft except in the N position. If you have an electric shift case, you can take the motor off the back and rotate the shift mechanism by hand. The N position won't be marked on the electric shift case, but it's between 4H and 4L.

Now if the transfer case works alright, put the transmission in park and try to turn it's output shaft by hand. Shouldn't turn more than 1/8 turn or so (maybe less).

One of those things is allowing the driveshaft to turn freely, and from what you said (no movement in any gear, no park) I would guess that your transfer case has the case wear problem, which usually causes broken shift forks when the oil pump retainer breaks loose.

Thanks for the replies. They say there are transmission problems (3rd gear doesn't work at all). The truck is currently in Connecticut and I am from northern VT. It would cost a bit to get it towed back.

cost more to have them scam you and have to make a 2 way trip. i mean cmon it would cost more to rebuild than to get a new one. i have never heard of that myself so take that as you will

Right...thanks a bunch for all the input. As of right now I'm going to take it to a nearby transmission auto garage to get their opinion on the whole thing.
