starter removal

hi guys i have a 1951 ford truck f1 and wondering how the cap on the back of the starter comes off

bobj49f2 02-13-2013 05:23 PM

If you have the two long bolts out of the starter the cap should just fall off. In fact it's kind of hard for the starter not to fall apart when you take it off. The two long bolts are the only thing that hold the starter to the starter plate.

If you have the starter out of the truck just give the cap a couple of light taps.

As I recall, the cap on the back side of the bellhousing has to be knocked forward, it has a retaining lip that seats against the back of the hole in the BH.

Ross, I think he he's talking about the back cover on the starter. Maybe he is talking about what you posted, I could have misunderstood.

I think he's talking about the little "cup" that covers the bendix spring. Not sure if the 52 is any different, but you should be able to wiggle it out. It's tapered at the end where it's inserted. However, with all of the crud stuck in the cracks in there, it may be hard to wiggle it. Would be easier to knock it forward like Ross says.

The '51, if it's stock, has the flattie starter. It doesn't have a cover over the Bendix. It's held together by the two long 1/4" bolts that go through the starter, with the top one also going through the "L" bracket bolted to the oil pan. When you take the flattie starter out you have finagle the starter out or it'll fall apart in you hand.

i'm with 51 panel man on this one. i think the orig post is about the tuna fish can type cover on the other side (back) of the starter plate?? i have a long history with that cover.

i think ross's comment should say that it needs to be knocked "backward" toward the back of the truck???

ALBUQ F-1 02-13-2013 08:18 PM

I honestly think it goes forward, Dick, I can't remember, in any case I wonder why the OP wants to take that off? Starter hung up? They can be hard to get out, but taking the cup out won't help.

I must be missing something, what part of the starter are we all talking about?

Not shown... Dick's right, it does come off to the rear. You can see the little rolled edge it seats against.

OK, I see what you guys are talking about, #6677. I haven't had play with the starter on the V8 in my panel yet. I just remember it looking like the one in my F-2 with the flat 6. I'm pretty sure that one is one is a one piece stamped part.

Sorry :o

Where's the OP? He can clear this all up.

I knew I wasn't crazy because I replaced the starter in my 51 a few years ago.

Just because you replaced your starter doesn't mean you're not crazy:-X03
