Do I have my terminology right on tie rods?

I need to get a few tie rods for my X and am having a hard time making sure I have the right ones...

I need to replace the ones from the pitman arm to the right wheel. I am looking at rock auto and they are listing inner and outer tie rods. But not like what I had on my Suburban.

So if I am looking at this right, the tie rods that I need to replace are the left and the right outer. The tie rods that connect the wheels together are the inner tie rods if I have all my terminology correct.

I would just like someone to confirm this for me. I would hate to have order the wrong ones.

Would someone verify the following Moog p/n's are correct?
Left outer p/n MOOG-ES3427T
Right outer p/n MOOG-DS1438

Thank you in advance for the help!

NO!

Lots of misinformation here, let me try to clear this up. I went through this five months ago with mine. Snowseeker's diagram includes part numbers for the OBS F350; these are NOT the right part numbers! I downloaded it and modified it for the Excursion 4x4, and my source information is from the MOOG website.

OBS = OLD BODY STYLE (for those that don't know)

Thank you House DAD!!!

I could go up the road and get the parts at 2.5 x's the amount of RA prices.....I can get all the inner tie rods and adjusting sleeve to my door for under 130.

O'Riley's wants almost 200 for all the parts....

Since I am a cheap bastage......I will order and have it Tuesday!!

Thats correct, I actually couldn't find the excursion diagram online. I posted the pic because the OP primarily asked for the terminology of the parts, I figured he would be able to read the F350 part and know its not for the ex.

Yup, but of course the problem is the differing terminology between the aftermarket and FoMoCo. For example the aftermarket calls the drag link components inner tie rod ends, which is confusing as heck! Just like FoMoCo calls their alternators generators!

It took me the better part of an hour sorting this out when I ordered mine, and the source of my issue was correlating "drag link" with "inner tie rod end". :-wink

Hi gang,
My first post here on FTE, and I'm a cheap bastage too. Since I'm going to be needing a front end job on my new to me 02 Ex 7.3, I'm just wondering what you're referring to by "RA prices". I wanna get my stuff there too!

Thanks,

Curt

I agree and run into this as well all the time. Normally when at any part place we have to look at the diagram and I have to point out the part. Then after I point it out the person is like "Well that is the (*%^) part" and I am like "sure, this time".

I have always called the main arm from the pitman arm to where ever it goes the drag link. The other arms that go to the spindles I always call the tie rods.

Tom/Snowseeker and everyone else

Is there really a big differenct between F 250 and F 350 front end? The parts aren't interchangeable?

There's no difference.

Please pay attention to what Tom stated in his post. OBS F350.

OBS = Old Body Style, which are the '97 and older trucks. Not sure exactly how far back the term OBS goes, I think to '94, possibly earlier.
