Alrighty guys, we are into the second month of 2013! Where the heck did January go?

I know some of you fellow WAFTEers live more central/Eastern washington so if you guys who don't live close enough to use want to make your own meets that are closer then go right ahead! I feel kind of bad since a few of us western side guys are meeting up, seems like those of you on the eastern side who are too far away are being left out.

Mind you that the truck has been running for more than an hour
so it's nice and warm. There is more than one way to skin a cat
or delete the EGR system. AND if I have to it takes less than 5 minutes
to turn it back on for the state snoopers.

I was told that I can leave a set in 4X4 and by the way it took off last night
I bet it would. That and the black smoke cloud.
I am learning how to not kill my MPGs with a heavy right foot.
The truck really responds well and very snappy now. No more sit and wait
for the turbo to spool up.

well boys, thought i'd give you an update on my engine progress. so far i have the crank, cam, and pistons installed, all bearing clearances checked out, and making progress. taking a lunch break right now, but when i head back out i'll clean and install the oil cooler, oil pump, front and rear main seals, oilpan, etc. then i get to flip it over and screw in my head studs and have all kinds of fun :)

and now we get to have more fun with a miscalibrated torque wrench.
as i said above, i had the rods all torqued down and had moved on to the oil cooler, when i realized that the spec i had my wrench set to didn't feel anywhere close to the response the bolts were giving me.
so i stopped and compared that torque wrench to another, and found it was about 10 ft-lbs below all my others for the same setting. so after i recalibrated it to match my other torque wrenches, i returned to the rod caps. some of them needed nearly 90* to reach the torque spec now that the wrench is calibrated. my torque values feel a lot better now.

this is at least the third time i've had one of my harbor freight torque wrenches lose calibration on me, but in the past its always happened when the jam nut at the adjusting sleeve comes loose, this time that was taped down and secure, but it had changed all by itself.
i guess thats why they're so cheap

Nice to see you are making a lot of progress. At least the torque wrench was 10 under and not 10 over tot he point of snapping heads off... That wouldn't be fun.

yeah, i'm glad it was off that way not the other!

my trick for calibrating them is to connect them head-to-head with a known good torque wrench, set at the same setting - i used 60 ft-lbs this time, and comparing how close to each other they click. the other 2 torque wrenches in my box matched each other perfectly, so i used one of them for my standard of whats right, then adjusted the one i was using until it matched.

i tried to get the rear main seal on there before i had to run off to a meeting this evening, but screwed up the seal just about as soon as it touched the crankshaft, so i got another one and get to try again in the morning. the first one was labeled as being made of PTFE, the same stuff as your pipe thread seal tape, and the seal material was horribly brittle, it came with a plastic install sleeve, and thats what folded the seal lip over, and as soon as it started to fold, it cracked. the seal i picked up tonight is made of a more conventional rubber, and should install normally.
