Toyota PS box w/ 289 question

Anyone running the Toyota PS box with a small block Ford that can tell me what exhaust manifold/header they are running on the driver's side? The factory manifold on my 289 (dumps straight out the back) hits the box.

I built the mount that AX drew up. Looks like it would work fine if I can clear the exhaust manifold. I will drill the top and bottom frame flange bolt holes once i get it bolted in on the side ( actually can do it now that I have the front axle and springs out).

I am trying to figure out what would work before throwing money at headers/manifolds that won't work.

Thanks for the help.

All Ford stainless exhaust manifolds

The 48 F1 custom stake bed I'm building has the Toy steering in it too, and in looking about I found that Ford has some stainless exhaust manifolds on some of their early 90's cars. The ones I got were from a 92 T bird, and turned out to be ok for fit, with some mods included.

The passenger side was an easy slice and reweld to turn the outlet some, and that was done.

The driver's side was a lot more complicated, but with the use of a stainless 90 degree bend, I was able to remake that to work as well. I still am considering a heat shield to protect the steering box, and do know I will be adding 90 degree fittings to attach the hoses to the box, but Sweets makes some that will do the job. I don' have the part numbers yet, but know they do exist.

The Ford manifolds are not made of the best stainless .. so they will turn color some, so I'm likely to have them ceramic coated before use. You also have to use a TIG to do the welds. Last thing ..... the final photo is of the PS unit, and is painted to protect it .. .that is not the ceramic stuff ... yet.

Here are the photos .... hope this helps. The best part of this was the overall cost to get true stainless manifolds. Less that $100 for it all.

Thanks for the info and pics.

I was looking at a set of block hugger headers and they looked like they would clear the ps box, but then it looked like the passenger side would hit the starter without going to a mini starter.

Thanks again.

I went with Mustang/Falcon/Comet exhaust manifolds from the mid 60s. They go straight back because all the block huggers and other manifolds I tried interfered with the box. My engine is offset to the right about an inch or inch and a half. And I used the Classic Haulers toyo box mount so it sits more upright. This will make it nice with the column too since it will be virtually a straight shot to connect it up.

I think the manifold I have is that type already, but when I made the motor mounts, I kept things pretty well centered. When I made the ps mount, I had mocked up the original column and box, then matched the angle, so I should be close to factory. Thanks.
