2000 f250 7.3L worth?

So this is my first post in this section of the forums. I'm looking at a 2000 f250 7.3L supercab long bed 4x4. The stereo system got taken out of it awhile ago. It's got a rough inside (tears and stains in the seat). Also there's something wrong with the front differential. When we put it in 4 wheel drive the front axle would catch and make a nasty cracking noise. Like the locking hubs were jumping teeth? the guy rebuilt the motor at 289000 miles. He bought new pistons, glow plugs, cleaned up the crank shaft, and watever else can be done in the rebuild. So the motor itself has about 25,000 miles on it. He also rebuilt the tranny he says at the same time. The body has a few dents and the passenger door has a small crunch in the bottom corner. He's asking $8000, which I think is high with the condition and 4x4being out. I was wondering what it would take to rebuild the front 4x4system myself. Or what it would cost to have a shop do it. I was thinking of offering the guy $5000 so I could save some money for getting the stuff mentioned fixed. Do you think this is reasonable? I'll need to sell my 1995 f250 extended cab 351 before I can buy this truck. Thanks for your time and help guys.

Id give him like 3000...

I have been looking for a crew cab diesel over the last couple of weeks and have found numerous trucks in that price range that do not have the troubles this truck has now. I think I would keep looking......be patient, the truck you want is out there.

Thanks for the reply guys. He has receipts and pictures of everything hes done. he's been a professional mechanic for 4 or 5 years. He had a machine shop do all the boring of the heads and such. I've been looking for a 7.3L of this year for awhile (99-02) and they all seem to be a little pricey for me. I'm willing to get a truck that needs a little work and do it myself for 5 grand or less. I dont care so much about the interior, I'll be buying seat covers and stuff nayway. and it needs to be able to get muddy and stuff. I'm mostly concerned about the 4wheel, which I need for hunting and such.. he's had this truck on the market since November starting at $12000. It has a good strong motor and tranny as far as I could tell from the test drive. I just don't have 10K to spend and thought this would be a good alternative to get the diesel without the price? Thanks again..

I've seen complete front axles on craigslist for $700-$800.If its a hub you could get one off ebay fairly cheap or you could get some Warn manual hubs for $200-$300. If its the transfer case $400-$500 on craigslists. I'd say if you can get it for $5000-$6000 go for it.

I have too agree, it sounds pretty beat up. How much rust has set in? Also if the original injectors were re-used I'd keep at least 2k aside for a new set. If the turbo is original set aside another 1k. At almost 300,000 miles its time for, a complete brake system overhaul, hoses, fluid, pads, rotors, calipers. Not to mention the 4x4 issue. It could be simple ESOF hubs or need a pricy transfer case. Can you post pics of the truck?

bluemtn95ford 01-28-2013 04:48 PM

I believe he replaced the injectors and Im not sure about the turbo. I know he did alot more than just do a standard rebuild. I would post pictures but I dont know how :-X16 Ill make a temporary garage album for it so you guys can see it. As far as rust, there is none. He has the bed sprayed with bed liner wich seems to be barely used. He also had the bottom 6" of the truck sprayed with the same stuff, which hasn't seen alot of wear. Be sure to check my garage for pics. Thanks guys.

Also, there are a few dents in the body but none have rusted yet. I also forgot to mention that the front hubs (which are manual) are hard to lock in and slightly rusted around the housing on the outside of the wheel. This is why I thought it might be a problem with the hubs..

acf6 01-28-2013 04:55 PM

If the bottom of the truck has bed liner, chances are theres rust under it. 99% of times i see someone put bed liner on the bottom of the truck, its hiding rust.

bluemtn95ford 01-28-2013 07:37 PM

I'll be sure to check that. Thanks. although I didn't notice any when I looked it over.

That does not sound like a good purchase.
4x4 needs work, unknown cost, (diff?) beat up, seats torn, nearly 300,000 miles on everything but the motor with questionable rebuild.. no go.

*especially for 5 grand. 8 grand is a complete joke.

KEEP LOOKING.. right after you buy that POS, the perfect truck will pop up on craigslist. Trust me.. just wait it out.

I would tell him $2500 take it or leave it and really there I am being generous there isn't much truck left of it being high mileage and 4x4 not working.

Wow... Really? I seriously doubt he would take it. :-X15 Especially considering the year of the truck and his work in the rebuild. I guess I can start low and see what he'll take? The thing is, I need to sell my truck before I can buy a new one. And I can't afford to go without a truck for long. (hauling hay, horses, etc.)
If I can sell mine for 4-5k I think I'de offer him about a grand or two less for repairs. Sound like a good idea?

Also, with the truck being rebuilt about 25,000 miles ago, I have a lot of life left in the motor and tranny. Versus a nicer truck I buy for 10k with 200-300k miles. I figured I may save money in the long run. Thanks guys I'm getting closer I'm just still not sure lol

Redneckfordf2502002 01-28-2013 09:41 PM

I would definatly start low to me it doesn't look like it is that good of a deal to get from him. I would keep looking also you may find a better deal.

I think that number is crazy, would you let your 7.3 truck with 4 wheel drive and from what I can tell from the pics not a bad body go for $2500. I know I wouldnt, I think I would try to pinpoint where the noise is coming from in the front end and if its just a hub the truck is worth between 4 and 5 grand all day long.
