Swapping a 460 into a 79 f250 4x4
I am thinking about replacing the 351m in my 79 f250 four wheel drive with a 460 from a 71 continental. So what i have so far is the complete engine with all the accesories, a non-weighted flywheel for the early 460, a new clutch kit ,a heavy duty starter and a rear sump oil pan. So what i need to know is what mounts i need to install the engine in the truck, i bought frame mounts at the junkyard and new motor mounts from the parts store and then realized that the 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive frame mounts are totally different as in the 4x4 there is no crossmember to bolt the mount to.Im quite sure that someone has done this before and knows the correct mounts i need and anything else i need to make the swap. Thanks for all your help

I just got this swap done and all I can say is quit thinking about it and do it. Get the l&l motor mounts. I tried to make things work and when it was done I just bought the l&l stuff. If I had a welder and some torches I could have done more but I'm really happy with all the l&l stuff.

I had the 351m with a c6. I was just going to get the parts I needed but ended up buying them all and at different times. I should've got the kit but I tried to get by the cheap way. Just a roofer with his old truck and money is tight, lol. I didn't know l&l had more than one mount for this swap have about an inch thick piece of rubber and have a lifetime warranty. If you have a pan already you might want to buy them individually.

I got mine from Transdapt but L&L looks to be the same. Very easy, no headache!

I have used the L&L mounts before. They fit nicely and the engine sits right. My problem is they break easily and then I have to relace them. L&L only warrants them if you run their conversion headers. otherwise warranty is null and void. I am seriously thinking about those severe duty mount at JBG. They look awesome, and not that much more than L&L, but remember that your 460 is going to be way north of 300 hp from a 71 lincoln, 10.5:1 CR and like 365 HP and 500 tq according to chilton specs. That is a lot for L&L mounts. Goodluck.

When I got my 76 F250 4x4 the 429 was already in the truck, kind of. It was a hack job with turn buckels holding from exhaust manifold to the frame. And the engine pertches on the frame had been cut out where the mount bolted to them.
We drilled and fitted 390 mounts to the 429 block. Then cut the face off off the engine pertches and refaced them using steel from a leaf spring. Lowered the 429 and the trans. into the truck and marked where the new mounts would set. Lifted the engine out and put the pertchs back out and cut new slots for the mounting studs. then reintalled the engine and trans. Total cost was less than $20. |

In 1972 they changed to SAE Net Horsepower. There's quite a difference in the methodology. Gross basically allows open headers, few belt driven accessories and ideal conditions. Net requires production exhaust manifolds with all emissions equipment as well as production air cleaner and belt driven accessories. The SAE Net Horsepower ratings give a truer representation of actual power. |
motor mounts
Ok WARHORSE,how do you think the West Coast Bronco engine mounts would allow that motor to sit vrs the l&l and the l&l headers,,Im in this dilema as well 1971 Lincoln 460

I got solid mounts off ebay for 40 bux and been running them 4 years now with no issues ever!!
I also have mad dog fender well headers and the fit and finish was unbelievable!!! i'm running a 72 lincoln motor |

Make sure by measuring the stroke that it is a 460, as the block casting number: D1VE-6015-AB applies to 1971/73 429 & 1971/78 and some 1979 460's. During the 'Horse Power Race" automakers vastly overestimated their HP figures. While rated at 365 gross HP, 1971 Lincoln/Continental Mark III 460 is roughly 275 net HP. |
