Do I have an oil leak?
 

2010 Expy XLT-EL 4X4 HD Tow Pkg.

I've insisted on doing my own oil changes now since the wifes last visit to the oil change joint about a year ago. Knucklehead replaced the oil plug with either an impact wrench or an air ratchet. It was cross threaded and I had to replace the plug. The threads on the pan were boogered a bit but the new plug still threads on.

My last oil change I noticed a light coating of oil on the oil pan and bell housing (mostly on the oil pan). I attributed this to the mess of oil from taking off the oil filter last time. I cant figure out how to keep oil from getting all over the suspension and front diff. Any way, as there are no oil drips in the garage (the Expy's parking spot), I wrote it off to trace oil from my last oil change spreading around a bit.

Just did an oil change and the pan is again covered in a film of oil. Not dripping but oily/grimy to the touch (I wiped it clean last time). I'm noticing a droplet forming on the plug as well as on a few of the rear/driver side oil pan bolt heads. Still not a single drop on the garage floor. The bell housing has a trace of oil too but the majority of the oil is on the left rear of the oil pan. The whole pan has some oil on it, even up around the front face almost to the lip. My guess is that dirty airflow is pushing the oil all over the pan, even foward.

Never been even a single drop of oil on the garage floor.

So, has there been any history of oil leaks on these vehicles?

Could the boogered threads on the pan be letting oil out of the plug? It's grunt tight. If so, might a crush washer like our honda pilot's oil plug setup cure this?

I'm going to watch it very closely now. Oil levels, clean the pan, etc...

Without seeing what you have its hard to render an opinion. If the truck is still under warranty call the dealer and see what they say. Its unusual for the new vehicles to leak oil. If you want to check for the leak yourself, they make a dye that is specifically designed to add to the oil to help locate oil leaks. A auto parts store usuallly has it and the dye may come in a kit with a special flash light. Wipe everything down, add the dye and check it every couple of days.

Spray the snot out of it with degreaser, then hose it down. Look every day or so, find the leak.
