5 Speed manual shift problem

I have a 1995 F150 with a 302 and a 5-speed manual. I recently replaced the slave and master cylinders. The clutch itself is nearly new and in great shape, and everything else appears to be as well. However, I still have a problem shifting from first to second. If I take off in second, everything shifts smoothly. If I start in first and try to shift to second, I can't get the shifter into second. I just have to skip to third. Can't figure out why. Any advice would be appreciated!

Most likely an internal transmission problem in my opinion..
If its a M5OD then i'd say this is a good time to get a ZF :)

sounds like a synchronizer but thats my guess. it could be related to a shift tower problem also. good luck finding ZF5 for small blocks. They are a little harder to come by at where i live.

Possibly the shift fork. You should have an inspection cover in the floor of the cab. From there, you can pull the top of the trans and see the forks, and replace them if need be.

Post 8 for parts, and post 9 for a gold mine of pics and explanations on how to take the top off and what you'll find. I think it's a Tbird trans, but they are all Mazda boxes and all pretty much the same design.

Thanks for the tips, guys! Yeah, it's an M5OD and I have no doubt that a ZF would be nice, but if they are rare I will just see what fixing a synchronizer involves.

Just saw your post, 85. Thanks for the info! I will check that out.

I've actually stumbled upon quite a few small block ZF's in my area(lower pa, upper md)

my 88 has shifting problems, turns out that the clutch hanger was wore out, too much play causing it to not get a full stroke on the master cylinder. however it was both from first to second and when downshifting from second to first. was like a new transmission after fixing.

My F150 is a 4x4, but maybe I could find something that would work. Actually muscletruck, that might be something. It doesn't like to shift back to first until I come to a stop.
