Camper Towing weight
 

Quick question, I am looking at a camper that weighs 5700lbs empty, does my 2007 f-150 crew cab with a 5.4 litre engine have the capabilities to do this or will it struggle in hills and high winds, just looking for advice from someone who might know before I buy this camper. It's also a travel trailer not a 5th wheel. Thanks :-huh

The weight is well within the capabilities of your truck

The trailer is within the weight limit. You may already know but: Towing is more about stopping than pulling. Note the recent commercials on the Tundra pulling the 300K lbs space shuttle. By no means am I minmizing the importance of weight on drive train wear and tear, but try stopping that 300K load and it ain't happening. All said, the travel trailer is approaching the weight of your truck so get a brake controller and make sure the trailer brakes work.

Depends...is that 5700# the "dry" weight, unloaded or the GVWR? If it is the dry weight (which by the way is a joke), it will actually weigh closer to 7,000 to 8,000# fully loaded. At that point you will be over your trucks payload as a 7,000# trailer will generate over 900# of tongue weight which has to be deducted from your available payload.

Most half tons are notoriously light on payload. I doubt your crew cab has more than 1400# to start with (if that - my 06 SCab only has 1424), which doesn't leave much when you deduct the 1,000# of TW and WDH. The trouble with half tons is that you run out of payload way before you even approach the trucks so called "Tow Capacity". The old 80% rule - tow nothing that is more than 80% of the tow capacity works pretty well in the real world. You can probably do it but you'll be pushing and or over the limits. As always... The payload of a truck will vary based on many factors. I have an 08 screw, 5.4L, 4x2 and the payload of my truck is 1800lb. I've been to the scale with my truck and that number is correct, but does not include a theoretical 150lb driver, as some say. Truck weighed in at 5400lb with a full tank and me in the truck ( I weigh 200 lb). The GVWR of the truck is 7050lb (from the door sticker), leaving an 1800lb payload, which is what the door sticker says.

I am in the marker for a travel trailer this year also. Looking to stay close to a trailer with a GVWR of 7000 lb. I've towed a 6000lb trailer before, and my truck handled it great.
