having starting issue

the last couple days when I start my truck the starter keeps running even if I turn off the key. first time it happened I turned key back to run and it started and the starter disengaged. today I had to disconnect the battery cable to stop it. first I tried disconnecting the small wire going to the fender mounted solenoid it didn't stop till I disconnected the battery cable. don't have any idea what it could be.

Is this on your 1995 F-350? First time I heard of this happening on a 1992 or newer. One of your solenoids must be sticking. The fender mounted one or the one on top of the starter. Next time it sticks trying tapping on the fender mounted solenoid to try and release it. About the only cure would be to replace the sticking solenoid.

I was wondering if it was that or something in the column

fdude64 12-29-2012 05:03 PM

yes it is on my 95 f350

If you pulled the small slip on wire off the fender mounted solenoid and it kept spinning, you eliminated the possibility of the ignition switch or anything in the column.

ok that's what I had thought too

i have seen this many times. usually(95% of the time) it is caused by a bad solenoid.
every once in a while though it was caused by a low battery.

my money is on a bad solenoid.

fdude64 12-29-2012 06:16 PM

im guessing the fender mounted one since the starter is less than a year old

Yhoa, I would try the fender mounted solenoid first, beings it is a lot easier to replace. If it sticks any more before you get it replaced, try giving it some karate chops or tap on it in some manner. This will usually always release a sticking fender mounted solenoid. Keep us posted so we know for sure what it was.

ok I will get out tomorrow and swap it out with one I have in the garage, thanks for all the input guys, this forum is a great wealth of combined knowledge

fdude64 12-31-2012 05:57 PM

ok so swapped out the fender mounted solenoid and it still does the same thing. so now it is swap out the starter. just bought it in may so it is under warranty. just have to get out in the cold wet to change it tomorrow.

did you check to see if you are getting voltage after the solenoid?
they are made like crap these days. a few months ago i had to try 5 before i got a good one.

fdude64 12-31-2012 07:39 PM

I used one from my donor truck that I saved from the rebuild.

fdude64 01-01-2013 01:33 PM

well took starter off and took it in to be checked, it tested bad, but the ring gear on the flywheel is toast also. so I am going to have to pull it apart (again for those who followed my build thread) and replace the ring gear again. truck aint got 2000 miles on it since rebuild. this bites
