F250 mystery

Hey everybody I got a question about a 1960 F250 2wd that my dad and brother are lookin at. Its kinda a mystery cuz the truck has a dana rear but 5 bolt hubs all around...:-huh Also, the motor is listed as "not original t bird engine", but it could be an original 292 with t bird valve covers. I don't have any numbers on it but I am gonna check it out tomorrow and write them down. Also, its got the lightning bolt hood and steering wheel emblem. I could be wrong but on my 66 thats the 6 cylinder logo. Thanks ahead for info or tips!

Retro: when your there get the info off the data plate, located on the glove box door. That will tell the story of what it started out with. Might as well compare the serial number on the data with the one on the frame, it all smells a little if you are asking me.
Good luck in your quest.

Sounds like someone cobbled that truck together. F250 would have 8 lug rims, and that engine could be anything until you check its casting number. My 60 has a 62 motor in it, and you have to check those heads to make sure its a truck motor. In 62 they used AE on all blocks, have to find numbers on heads to determine if car or truck motor.

Ok so we checked the truck out today and got a load of more info on it. First off, the rear does have the 8 lug wheels so it is definitely the original rearend. The front axle, however, has 5 lug wheels. Numbers on the tag read F25COR31847. Color is M, trans is A, axle is 04. The owner said that the guy he bought it from put a t bird engine in it, but he could have just put in a truck 292. On the cylinder head it has the number 024. Numbers on the side of the trans were AB-7222-B25, OF18 on the bottom of the trans. Its a fine lookin truck but it still has some odd parts.

well it started life as F250 4.56 rear diff 2 wheel drive with 292 2v and three speed manual corinthian white.

Well we decided to buy the truck! Pickin it up today and we're gonna pump out the old gas, check spark and oil, and then see if she fires up.

I would do a oil change before and service the trany and axle befor driving, even starting it up. Make sure and pre-lube that motor good. If it has set for some time/years especially.

Yep we pumped out the old gas and tried to crank it but no go. Its gonna be some tuning and tinkering before it runs. Plus we're gonna keep it inside cuz ive seen what Illinois winters do to 60's pickups...

Numbers marked on trans are only related to the parts they are marked on.

F25 = F250 2WD or 4WD (F25 was used for both in 1959/60).

The MODEL code stamped on the Rating Plate defines whether 2WD or 4WD.

C = 292 2V

0 = 1960.

R = San Jose CA Assembly Plant.

31847 = 1960 Numerical Sequence of Assembly.

M = Corinthian White.

A = Ford 3 speed manual, non syncro 1st gear.

04 = Spicer/Dana 60 Rear Axle / 4.56-1 / no Limited Slip / 5,200 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity.

Casting numbers marked on blocks and heads are foundry marks, cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.

Thunderbird Y block could be a 292 4V (1955/57) or a 312 4V (1956/57). 1955 engines have the choke mounted on the intake manifold. 1955/56's used the awful Holley 'Teapot' 4V's.

Gear & Lightning Bolt used for many years, does not define I-6 from V8 EXCEPT on 1965/66 hood front emblems.
