Mamma's Sled '74 F450 CrewCab 6.7 Cummins P-Pump
So I picked up a 1974 Crew Cab for about $4K with a 12 Valve in it. I've had a '07 2500 6.7 Cummins rollover that I picked up at auction a couple years back for just over $5K with only 7500 miles. Shortly after I picked this up, I found an '06 F450 on Craigslist for $4300, fixed the motor and parted it out for $3500 except what I had to rob for suspension. Then found an ZF 6 for $1300. So now that I have the bulk of what I need here we go. Plan is:
1974 F250 Crew Cab 2006 F450 Front and rear axles, brackets, and suspension 2007 2500 6.7 Cummins P-Pumped (Jefferson State Diesel) ZF 6 Speed Manual New Process NV271D LT285/55R22 22" American Force Wheels B & W Gooseneck Hitch I wanted to do it in stages. First the drive train and then the motor upgrade, but looking at things now the conversion will take me quite some time. It was pretty reasonable to collect the bulk of the big stuff and the axle swap will be a cinch, but the motor upgrade and fab to the cab and chassis for that will take some time. We've started on tear down and mockup of the axle swap and here's where we are. Probably take me a couple rounds to post all the pics. The rear will bolt right up, same frame widths. At the front I will have to fab or modify control arms, make a custom panhard bar and braket @ the frame, mount F450 Power steering box, and cut and make new perches for the axle. @ the front the '74 is 4" narrower at both the axle and bracket mounts. http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h.../IMG951323.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h.../IMG950935.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h.../IMG954795.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...MG959868-1.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...-10-00_627.jpg http://i255.photobucket.com/albums/h...-14-51_234.jpg |
Looks like a sick project! I'll be keeping an eye out on this one.

I have a buddy that did a Cummins 12 valve swap in a 79 F350 and that thing was a work horse. He wound up selling it and building more stuff. Anyway, he had a few gripes with it. He had stacks and they were too loud for long drives. It did not have a/c so he had to have the windows down which made it louder. And finaly, he wishes he put air ride in it to spare his spine. Just a few things to consider.

Tow Pig and cruising with the family on trips. I'm stacking way too many miles on my daily drivers and am looking for ways to make them last longer. I have the 1st MegaCab ever made and have already put over 100K miles on it and already have 60K on my 2011 Excursion. I need them to last me forever so the best answer is to build a new weekend warrior and commuter. The commuter is a Vt275 International Powered, '86 Ford Ranger that I'll be starting next week. For the price of a brand new truck I'll have 2.
When you get the 4.5 liter in the Ranger you can get custom calibrations from PHP. I saw they were looking for beta testers so you might be an ideal candidate. Be advised that the glow plug and AIH relays are part of the start up procedure on that particular model, which is different than how the 7.3 systems work. I am considering a 4.5 Power Stroke International Scout project if I can locate a good chassis. :-drink |
