New Guy 5.0

Hello all, I'm a proud new F-150 owner! Yes this is also my first post. I had a question for those with the experience. I just bought a 2012 xlt 4x4 with the 5.0. I've been following this site for some time and noticed there doesn't seem to be many posts on problems with this motor. This was one major reason I chose it over the eco. I don't tow heavy and reliability is #1 with me. That being said is there anything I should keep an eye on with these motors?

This is by far the nicest truck I've ever owned. My last F-150 was a 94 with the 5.0, never had any trouble with it either but man was it a dog! My last 3 vehicles were Rangers, gone but not forgotten. Thanks for your input, this site is a great place for info! I'm sure I will learn alot being here. Thanks again!

Watch for leaks.

Stay on top of your oil changes.
Especially at the 0-20,000 miles because it is braking in through out that period.
And use only motorcraft filters :)
I get mine from ROCK AUTO.

Thanks for the tips. I will keep an eye on it. Is there anyplace it seems prone to leak or was this just in general? I only have about 700 miles on the motor but was thinking I would change it at 1000 and then go to normal schedule.

Yes just general leaks.

This is my plan.
I got some chevron 5w20 on sale for $2. I got enough to change the oil every 3,000 miles untill I get to ~15,000 miles. Then I will go 7,500 miles on 0w20 on mobil 1.

There is a good mod to do for the 5.0L, and any other engine.

Install an oil catch can. It mounts on to the crank case vent tubes. Do a f-150 5.0L Catch Can" search on google. there will be a few threads with lots of pictures.

You can buy a kit or make your own. They are easy to make. I am planning on making one.

Mine hasn't dripped a drop of anything, but it's only a few months old. I love it.

It is not for driping oil. It is for blow by from the crank case vent system allowing engine oil to get in to the intake. The oil will burn from the combustion leaving carbon in the combustion chamber.

Ahhhh...I KNEW there had to be some flaw with this otherwise wonderful engine...I'll look into it!
