2012 F150, 4th time in shop! Now intercooler!
 

Guys, my 12 F150 FX4 4x4 is currently at the dealer getting a new intercooler, they put a deflector on it about three weeks ago. The deflector was supposed to stop the "missing/slipping" feeling as I was driving normal highway speeds. They said the current intercooler showed signs of moisture in some tubes. I don't see how putting a new one on solves the issue since it's a new truck! It's just going to do the same thing if moisture is the problem, unless they've redesigned them, does anyone know or had this done?

Been hearing a bit more talk recently on the issue of moisture on the intercooler tubes, no 'fix' that I've seen yet.

Thanks, the new intercooler is supposed to be in Wednesday so I guess I'll know after the install if it's one just like the original or if it's redesigned. I really don't see the point if they haven't changed it. My truck only has 4500 miles on it. Really dissappointed in this, I traded in a 2008 Tundra with 90k on it and never turned a bolt, not happy at the moment. I owned 2 F150's prior to the Toyota and they were good trucks so I wanted to go back to the Ford because I respect the company. I feel like I might have made a mistake.

just testing a theory ... if you don't mind ....

1. what type of driving do you do the most? (city/highway ... to me, highway would be sustained speeds 55 or more for 15-20min.)

2. what type of fuel do you usually use? octane? oxygenated or non?

3. predominate climate? i.e. what state - as it relates to overall relative humidity.

lots of theories tossed around, just looking for input without jumping to any premature conclusions.

1. I live in a small town. I work in town but I use the truck daily to take care of business, so probably 40/60, 40 in town, 60 highway.

I have 4500 miles on my F150 FX4 supercrew 4X4. I bought it late July. I took it back 2 weeks later because the power sliding rear window switch went out, no big deal. Then one night (it was raining) I attempted to pass a vehicle and it sounded like the transmission (or something major) fell off the truck. I lost power and it started jumping, shuddering etc...I pumped the accelerator a few times, it done it for another couple hundred yards then was normal. I reported it to the dealer. They knew nothing about it because no lights came on. I told them I found some info on the forums, they found a note from Ford. Ford said install a deflector, they did, it helped nothing. After that first occurance it started jerking, almost like a transmission slipping as I would drive at highway speed. It would especially do it at 50-51 mph while gently accelerating, not necessarily when I would make it drop down a gear, just normal acceleration. It was bad enough my wife would feel it as a passenger. They picked up the truck last Wednesday and have ran several tests, nothing was misfiring or any of that. They then talked to a Ford engineer. He had them look at some tubes I think a cold air changer? Anyway, they said there were signs of water in some tubes relating to the intercooler. They ordered a new intercooler, supposed to install it tomorrow. They did tell me it's a new redesigned intercooler and it is supposed to stop this issue. I was glad to hear that, no point of installing another one like the truck came out with. So I guess we'll see what happens.

Subscribing. I don't have an Ecoboost, but I'm really curious if the new intercooler is, in fact, different/redesigned and fixes the issue.

Brad, I'll post my results after the new intercooler install. Again, the dealer assured me it was NOT the same as the original. He said Ford had redesigned it, and they are getting ready to issue a new TSB on this issue. Hopefully for all our sakes it will fix this!

Is there some way to design a water/air seperator?

Wendy now has 13.5K miles on her truck without a problem. She drives 70% highway and the rest city. She is not a jumper off the line but is known for high speeds on the interstates. Also her truck gets BP reg gas 99% of the time (other brands only if no BP around). Either she has gotten a Wednesday truck or her driving habits makes her truck happy. Chris

Service guy called me, installed new intercooler, test drove it and it still does it!!!

Dealer can only repair broken things. They cannot correct design flaws. As much as I read about this kind of thing I think it could be a design flaw. If so, then the Ford engineers have to address it before the dealers can help the customer.

I totally agree, dealership has done all they can...I have no issue with them.
The thing is the one they put in yesterday is the newly designed intercooler. They started production on them on Oct. 5th.

Glad I bought the 5.0. 30k hard miles and not a bit of trouble.

I wish I had bought it....they sold ecoboost based on fuel mileage and the loaner I'm driving has the v8. It has gotten just as good mpg as mine.

Yeah, I think the ecoboost name misleads a lot of people. They should name it powerboost instead. From what I've read the ecoboost gets marginally better mpg on average, then there are some that have a glitch and get terrible gas mileage. Power of a v8/gas mileage of a v6 gimmick never really proves true.

I read an article in car and driver that compared 6 or 8 vehicles against each other. Both would be a crossover or something, one would have a inline 4 turbo the other a bigger v6. Both made about the same power, and surprisingly both got the same gas mileage.
