weight of a 460
 

I'm looking at an engine stand but would like to know how much a 460 weighs. Any ideas?

A whole bunch. I just bought a 460 and highly suggest this engine stand.

I am currently using it and it doesn't sag the slightest bit when the motor is on it. VERY sturdy and very secure.

I think there around 600 - 800 pounds. Don't quote me on it though, that's just an estimate.

I would definitely go with a 2000 pounder. I had a 351m on a 1000 pounder and it didn't look very stable.

About 750 lbs. I have the stand that keith posted a link to and I wouldn't go with anything else. Put a 460 on a 1000 lb stand and watch your butt pucker every time you try to roll it around the garage.

I got them on the sidewalk sale for something ridiculous, $27 or something. I bought like 5 because they are great to sweeten deals when trading for stuff... people tend to think a new engine stand costs $100 or so. Only have one left, but its been holding a fully dressed 460 for about 3 years now in the back of my basement. Had stock exhaust manifolds on it for a while. So it'll be fine.

IIRC, the dry weight is 800. I used a 1000 lbs from harbor freight and had no problems

Better safe than sorry. Only $130 for 2000lb. I can roll that thing around without a worry in the world. Glad to see I made it into your signature! lol

Rolling the one I used was a little sketchy. Like keith said, better to go with a 1 ton.

I used the 1000 lb one in my link. I've rolled the motor all over the place, worked on it, and like I said, left it fully dress on there for over 2 years. There no need to spend extra money. The 1000 lb one in the link is fine. If you wait till its on sale (google the part number and you can probably find a coupon) and use a 20% coupon (they let you use them together) you can probably get it for under $40.
Sometimes the right tool will do just fine, and spending more just to spend more is just.. spending more.

You can purchase whatever you want, but I would still suggest the 1 ton. Not having to ever worry about anything happening to my 460 is well worth the extra cash. I would purchase the 2000lb one again and again and again. Peace of mind and security is worth it to me. If I am going to build a $2000 engine, a $60 1000lb stand isn't even an option knowing that I can pay an extra $70 and be 100% certain that it wont fall. I read many many reviews and have heard that the 1000lb stands with flex and some say they wont, just like hasteranger.

In conclusion, a $130 stand for 2000lb capacity is my definite choice over a $60 1000lb stand that I have read can and have flexed under the tension of a big block motor.

I used 4 of the 1000 lb stands. all four were just fine. 2 of them held 460's for 2 years. all four held one for many months.

And the ones I don't have, have all been holding 460's ever since as well.

Like I said, you can spend more, but if you want to hold a 460, spending more is just spending more.

You both have your own opinions about the subject. hasteranger says a 1/2 ton will be fine. You say a 1 ton is better. I agree that a one ton would be better, because there is less of a chance of the engine falling. The reason I bought and used a half ton (and maybe hasteranger is the same way) instead of a 1 ton was because i didn't have the money for a 1 ton.

OP: if you can spare the money, a 1 ton would be the way to go. If not, a 1/2 ton will be fine too.

Buy the 1 ton. There are heavier engines out there. I had a 460 on mine the other day, sold that. Now I have a cummins 12 valve on it full dress. I cannot say it doesn't make me nervous to have that much weight on the stand but it seems to be holding fine. Full dress a cummins is right around 1100 to 1300 lbs.
