smells like burning wires when driving up hills

my e350 is running great, but for a few weeks now, i've noticed that i get a nasty smell when driving up long hills, especially at highway speeds. usually its a certain mile-long hill i usually take at 70-75, but it happens in other places too. the smell strongly resembles hot wiring, though that makes no sense.
i checked for any wires close to the exhaust and found none, and nothing else on the truck would have a reason to heat up for working the engine harder.
any ideas?

Does it kinda smell a bit like a worn out V belt?
I have the same issue during the summer, and it goes away in the winter.
I figure it has something to do with the temperature in the engine bay.

i know what a belt smells like, and i know what burning wires smell like. this smells a lot more like wires.
a few months back i burned off a brand new belt for my second alternator, so that smell is quite familiar to me, and doesn't appear to be what i'm smelling here.
i'm not sure so much if it relates to the temp of the engine bay, or the exhaust temp. the exhaust temp almost seems more likely, as it happens whenever i'm working it hard, but without a gage to know that it only happens above ****, that remains in the world of speculation.
i do know that the coolant temp remains constant at 195-200 when this is happening, so thats not a factor
