1948 F-1 Warner 4 speed pops out of 4th gear

I just rebuilt my 4 speed crash box with new bearings, shafts and thrust washers. the gears all had minimal wear so none were replaced. it is tight and smooth but pops out of fourth gear on long downhills-at slower speeds it eases itself out. at a higher speed [50-55] it poped out more violently- any advise on what to look for?:-huh

Check the detent springs in the cover, and the cluster gear end play.

Thanks Chuck- I will check the detent springs-I have the bullet shaped detent pins-do you know where I can locate the springs? Frank S.

Popping out of gear can be a sign of a worn synchro gear. The gear teeth may look fine, but the synchro rings are what hold it in gear.
It could also be those detent ball/springs in the housing, but usually those aren't the culprit.

Look on the bench where you did the rebuild.

That didn't actually help at all, did it? One in every crowd..
Sorry.

It's a ball/spring assembly, no? The spring would be behind the ball. It's been a while since I've been inside one. I had one with a cracked synchro that was hard to get out of that gear.

Someone on here will probably have a parts transmission layin' around. I know of a good 'take out' but it is on the right coast and shipping would kill you. Till you find one, measure the hole the spring fits in and buy one at your local good hardware store. You'll probably have to cut the spring to fit. Buy a couple with different strengths and choose the one that works the best.

Ford used that transmission starting in the Model A years. You can get every part for the transmission you need. Often it is easier to find four speed spur gear parts in the Model A parts supplier websites. I spent a couple minutes and found this: Sacramento Vintage Ford

An even better source is: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/t...ruck4speed.htm
