Oversize and overlength door hinge pins?
I need a set of oversize hinge pins for the upper door hinges on my 49. The problem is I am planning to run mirrors on the hinges rather than screw them to the doors like the original. I can find oversize ones and I already have the longer ones but I can't find both. Has anyone come across these?

An idea - Try to find out who is making the pins - As limited a use that there is for them I would imagine that there are only one or two making pins for all makes of old vehicles
Figure out what size you need and contact the manufactures and see if they make one that will fit your need The other way is get a small machine shop to make up a set and get then hardened to the right spec. |
I just added mirrors to my hinges on my 48 F1.I bought mine from Bob Drake in Oregon and they came with the right pins.I ordered two more pins for the lower hinges and had to cut about one quarter inch for the right length.I think the pins were .280 and they fit the hinges perfectly. The doors now fit great now with no with no slop in the hinges and I can see whats behind me.

I got the mirrors from Dennis Carpenter, going by the part number it's probably the same as Bob Drakes. The 0.28" is the standard pin measurement, the oversize ones are 11/32 which works out to 0.34". I already fitted the door with the 0.28" pins and the rear of the door has about 1/4 to 3/8" play just from hinge slop, not good when trying to get panel gaps right.

It's amazing what a few hours on the internet can do. I hunted around and found two possible solutions.
The first is another set of pins from a GM car, they are the correct 11/32" oversize diameter and are 4 1/16" long with the correct spline under the head. Cut them to lenght and they should work fine. The second is a set of bushes from a Chrysler, they have a 1/4" ID and 3/8" OD. I'll be able to ream the hinges to take the bushes and then ream the bushes to take the original size of pin. Not a lot of money so I have ordered parts for both options, I'll see which will work best and go from there. |
Sounds like a good deal
For the benift of others, uncluding me, could you post the part numbers and the source for the pins and bushings - Thanks |
