dana 44 front axles f150 f250

i have front axles from a 77 dana 44 f150 and want to replace the ones on a 77 1/2 f250 dana 44. are they compatible? thanks Jim

The 3/4 ton axle is 8 lug and leaf sprung, were as the 1/2 ton is 5 lug and coil sprung. The axle under the 250 is a hd44, and swapping it out to a standard 44 is a down grad, the differences are thicker tube, bigger hubs and bearings, dual piston calipers, possibly other things I can't think of. I am not exactly sure but the 150 44 may be standard low pinion, vs the reverse cut hd. Aslo wms to wms on the half ton is around 65" vs 69" on the hd.

What exactly is wrong with the current axle? If damage is too much to be worth it a 77.5-79 hd44 can be had for around 400 bucks depending where about you live.

just the the left and right inner axles with the u joints. visually they look the same . my f250 has wasted stubs and the f150 has new u joints sorry for the confusion

There is a difference between the stub shafts, not exactly sure, but I believe the spline count is different. I don't think they are the same length either. I should have known you were just asking about the shafts as to the (s) to axles.

thanks 79silverstreak , was hoping for the part I had worked. glad that you answered before I went to take them from the f150. Best of luck with your truck

Yes, I agree with the above, the inner shafts should be the same but the outer stub axles are different.

you may want to check that...my 78 f150 s/c had a leaf spring suspension and the inner axles were/are different than the coil spring d44, the coil spring inner axle leaked around the seal because it was slightly smaller, best way is to pull them both and mic them...

Actually, the 77 F150 axle had thick tubes, so there is no strength sacrifice there. Additionally, when I swapped 8 lugs on my axle, I used the F150 stub shaft. It was about 1/8" to1/4" too short, but it worked fine. The only thing was that when you were installing the snap ring, I had to push the axle out by reaching in to the u-joint.

In this article, he covers tube thicknesses:

Yep, the F150 super cabs were oddballs... take different outers. Not sure if they are the same as F250 but just as a guess I think they might be.

thanks everyone, Teds74 article was good, at least we know that the u-joints are the same. I will check the axles side by side and see what happens but not this week and reply back
