Battery light after alternator change?
 

So heres the deal.Attempted to change the alternator on my 6.0 for failing an idle test.Batteries are new and would charge fine driving around town.Just not at idle.If i rev up to 2k they charge fine. Changed out the alt. and now have a battery light.Never had it before.Drove around town for a while and never went out.Was gonna try another alt. but they didnt have anymore.So i put the old one back on and the battery light is gone. Why would thhe battery light come on with a new alt? Oh and the new alt was a remanufactured.Gonna try a brand new one tomorrow.Hope this all makes some kind of sense

I take it its an alt from a Chain store???? The Neww alternator is Bad seen this Many Many times before with chain store alternators

DC Power is Hands Down the Best if you can afford it
DC Powers alts have a smaller pulley so it can put out more power at Idel when you really need it most especialy when Cold out

Have you cleaned all connections even the grounds where they mount tot the truck and engine??? I still think the Alternator is Bad but good to make shure you have good connec tions

The Electronics are very touchey in these trucks and low Power will Kill FICM and Injectors stuff like that those are spendy so its Besst to get a Top of the Line Alternator and Battery setup it will payoff in the Long Run

have them bench test it BEFORE you leave the store

You see this at all times. The bad apple in the barrel.
I had an alt re-built for a Ranger I had because Ford
did not have any yet too new (1988) So I had it done
at a local shop that only does alt and starters.
Well got it home and plugged it in and blew the headlights
with too high of voltage. Turned out the new regulator
that was installed was bad. So I would do what Daddykitty
says and have then test it before you go.

I whent through 3 chain store alt's in 6 mo. :(

FWIW this kinda stuff is very hard on the 6.0L electronics^^^^I see it all the time here too


I have a china alt on my car but it goes at 1 per year so far but car dont have the type of electronics to damage the 6.0L does

that Cheap China alternator IS very High Risk Gamble not worth it IMO

so i purchased a DC Power alternator last night. the 185 amp one.Gonna take the chinese piece of crap back! Should have it in a week. Hopefully no battery light when i put her in.I'll keep you posted.Thanks for all the info!

sweet you made a very smart move going to DC Power

I read the pully is smaller than stock.Will i need a smaller belt? And this wire upgrade? Do I really need to do this or will it be ok just leaving the wires the way they are? How hard will that be to do? Not real good with all this electrical stuff!

You should have shims for the alternator, so the belt is the same.

If you are wondering about the wiring, then call the DC Power guys. But if they say you need it, then I would install it. Should be as simple as a piggyback wire for the 185A unit (I would think anyway).

The DC power alt comes with shims to raise the alt up to compensate? Would like to see how this goes on install, whether you upgrade the charge cable. I am interested in doing this too.

I didnt get any shims with mine and it has worked just fine at all times with A/C on

for some reason I thought the 250-270amp alt were the ones that need the Shims

The XP250 & XP270 use a different housing and do require the spacers..... Make sure if ordering either of these 2 alternators you "remind" the boys at DC to send them. They forgot mine and shipped free of charge!
