California Emissions
Kid wants a project. Wants to put a modern efi 460 w/ ZF 5 speed into a highboy. Cant make these mods in California after 72 or after 73?

as long as you swap over everything from the current 460 with 5speed, there is no problem doing it in any year thats older than your truck.... it will require a trip to the emissions refferee and they will actually certify it. chec kthe Bureau of Automotive Repair. and look into the Engine change guidelines. it is completely legit and actually would run substantially cleaner. if you have any further questions PM me as i use to work at the refferee

A vehicle already exempt from emissions (model year 1975 and older) DOES NOT REQUIRE B.A.R. CERTIFICATION for such an engine swap/retrofit. The statement in bold above is incorrect. For a vehicle which is subject to emissions testing (non-exempt), a newer engine can be swapped into the older vehicle and be certified but an engine that pre-dates a vehicle would not be able to be certified. Meaning, a vehicle can be updated with a newer engine but the vehicle cannot be backdated with an older engine. I've been through it before and it is a pain in the azz. |
