Need Advice for Stuck Lifter
 

thanks in advance for the help,

I recently bought a 1959 F100 with a 292. The guy told me it had a stuck lifter and would most likely need a new cam as well. The engine runs, but has the obvious knock of what sounds like a cam lobe bangin on a stuck lifter.

Pulled the valve cover, sure enough #5 cylinder exhaust rocker is not moving at all.

Dropped the oil pan, some shiny debris found in the oil.

I'm thinking the cam lobe is shot. Now what to do?

Replace cam, lifters, pushrods? Entire rebuild? Or go with a newer 302?

Anyone have any experience with this type of issue?

price out fixing the the 292 vs a 302 swap keep in mind motor mount fabrication trans change and fabrication drive shaft

If compression is good, and it runs good with the exception of the miss in #5, just replace cam, lifters, timing chain & gears, and any bent or damaged pushrods.

As the Y blocks have mechanical lifters, a stuck lifter usually means that it is rusted or galled in its bore. Also, if you decide to change cam and lifters, keep in mind these are mushroom lifters.

As for your engine an engine rebuild is the way I would go. However not knowing what your finances and plans for the truck, you may want to chance changing just the bump stick or go all in on new drive train. So my suggestion is to take our advice and use your own judgment.LOL

Also run it with the valve covers off and see if it is oiling the rockers. It was a typical issue with the Y blocks. So much of an issue that the parts stores used to sell an outside oiler kit to run oil lines to the rockers through a hollow valve cover bolt. I have also built my own after the kits were no longer available.

Think I'm gonna try to stick with the Y Block. Gonna check the rod bearings, if they're not trashed, gonna replace cam, lifters, pushrods etc.

I'll update on my progress.

If you are gonna go thru the trouble to check the mains, you might as well replace them and throw on a new oil pump while you are at it!
