I've got two Trans Ams, too. Both 1971 year with the 455HO engine. I've had them much, much longer than the 1966 Ford. Now consider now many NOS Trans Am parts might be in this many 12-gallon bins...

Is there any way of identifying an alternator to a particular era? The one off my truck looks like this. It has Motorcraft cast letters if that helps. Any numbers or codes to look for?

Pontiacs are crazy how many date codes, casting numbers and on the engine block and transmission are even partial VIN numbers. You can really run wild with the stuff. The hunt...

1966 Ford F250 4x4

6k or 7k on the high side and thats a good price and i would ship it back here no problem..

a truck like that around here rotted out is like 4k or 5k.. and nice one like that original is 10k+

I just talked to my buddy (the one who drove the dump truck in the video) and he has been to see this one already. He says while it's not as nice as mine...not even close, to use his words...he thought it was decent.

No such thing as Motorcraft until 1973.

1972: US Gov't forced FoMoCo to sell Auto-Lite as they claimed FoMoCo had a monopoly on autoparts. FoMoCo then started in-house brand Motorcraft, all the Auto-Lite part numbers became Motorcraft part numbers.

Posts 132/135: All the packages introduced in 1969 (with a striker plate and parklight gasket FoMoCo envelope exceptions). 1969 introduced the 'running Mustang' on packaging.

Circa 1962 thru 1968 cartons were marked FoMoCo, were blue & white with blue lines. Previous cartons were marked FoMoCo, were red & white with red lines.

Hoses, etc marked Ford or Ford within oval would have been marked FoMoCo prior to 1969.

CPR ~ Copyright 1966 appeared on parts packages well into the 1990's.

Yes there is a way to tell the era and what you should have on your truck.

The backside should be the "teardrop" style like shown but will say Autolite instead of Motorcraft. The adjuster mounting ear also differs with a rounded version and a square version. For yours the rounded version is correct.

They also had an ink stamping that gave volts and amps along with ID number, at some point they were also stamped in housing.

38 Amp which is standard for F100-250 would have a Purple stamp

55 Amp is Red

60 Amp is Green

Think the 45 Amp is Orange or at least for the 42 Amp it was.

I had the proper ink stamp but borrowed it out and someone cleaned it with Lacquer thinner and ruined it.

I have to re-think that now as it could be mid year 68 when they went to the Autolite~Teardrop. There was for sure a change but now the memory is slipping a bit when the teardrop was blank and when it said autolite. I know the adjusting tab changed from round to square but now cannot recall the exact date for it either.

You can do a correct alternator for probably 50.00 or less. Ebay listing is way way overpriced.

I have always done my own.

Gotta love all those NOS parts! I did same with my 427 F100 project found pretty much everything I needed NOS. Including grille, headlamp doors, all emblems, weatherstrips, lighting, dash pad, gauges and more.

I do my own alternators, too, but all Delco 10si so far. They can sure stuff a lot of parts into a small area. The si stands for "System Integrated" meaning built-in voltage regulator in that case (no pun intended). Only things to know is a couple of internal screws that either ground to the case or insulate from the case and you don't want to switch those two around and then holding back the brushes during assembly, but a good round toothpick or just about anything that shape works fine.


I stuff mine with NOS parts and at least for the TA a rotor and stator can be around $25 each, so doing it for under $50 with non import parts is hard to do if it needs those pieces. Here's a simple terminal kit in a sealed box that the guy wanted more than $50 for with shipping, and that's only about 6 tiny pieces. Needless to say, I didn't buy it. But, I do have a few of them already and they weren't free, either.

This is the drivers side front turn signal body. If anyone has a passengers side NOS that they want to part with I'd be interested. The drivers side has a ground wire on it that you can see that the passengers side apparently doesn't have. When I first saw that one my truck I thought for sure someone had added that.

Here's that engine wiring harness. Only difference I could find in the wiring was the extra red wire to the right of the picture. It's plugged into itself and taped together.

And the taillight harness. This harness, like my original, has a fabric covering over the top of the tape that is interesting to look at. Makes it looks more like a rope than a wiring harness. It also has a metal ID tag on it with the part number and a FoMoCo logo.

Tailgate hinges repainted Wimbledon white in a PPG Concept single stage with a 2K epoxy primer. I used the darker background so they would stand out better.

In that last shot it looks like the engine was painted on its side and then rotated upright before it dried and a big run from each freeze plug ran down the block.
