I Have an Idea
 

So a hydroboost conversion is very high on my to do list for my 87 F-350 460 C6 4WD, while doing it I'll need to make a bunch of plumming and PS pump changes, and one thing I will want/need is a cooler and this is where the idea comes from.

My tansmission has a coolers, and transmission fluid if not already flat out recomended works very well in PS. I should have a large reservoir, well my tranny has lots of fluid in it. My PS box and Hydroboost both should have low restriction drains, well there is a big tranny pan down there. So why not combine the systems.

If I run the cooler line out from the transmission to the PS reservoir it will always be filling the reservoir. Plumb the top of the PS reservoir to the tranny/PS cooler so any air bleeds out and all excess fluid flows to the cooler. Add coolers in the High pressure lines to the hydroboost and PS box. (there is a stock one but it sucks) Take the lines from the PS box and hydroboost and drain them to the tranny pan.

Seams to me this will give me much better PS and hydroboost performance while providing better cooling to my transmission,

Well you can make it work, even though the trans and PS take different fluids older C6's used type F fluid. I'd be paranoid about something happening like springing a leak or something and taking out my trans. Probably not likely but it makes me leary.

Good idea but I'd worry because if one system got contaminated (say something failed and fragged, leaving metal particles in the oil) it would affect everything eventually. Yeah the tranny has a filter but still... I personally wouldn't do it but its up to you.

I don't even like the oil-to-water stock transmission cooler. Engine coolant ruins clutch friction material. If I see one, I'll get me a trans oil cooler off a newer F-150 and stuff it behind my grille so I can ditch the oil/water cooler.

You can get a huge aftermarket one for less than $100 brand new with all the hardware and everything.

Good points, come to think of it gives me a good chance to add a secondary filter. My biggest concern I think is fluid loss if anything was gunna frag it's the tranny and then the tranny wouldn't pump anything big enough to do damage to the PS pump.

As for coolers I'm kinda with you, I personally would rather bring cool water to the tranny then fluid out to the radiator.


Ohh and burnout my 87 is mercon/dextron

The trans is but I'm pretty sure the PS pump is supposed to have typre F. I just looked this up for my '90 not long ago.
