1986 F250 4x4 conversion
 

I bought the running gear out of a rolled 1993 F350 <ACRONYM title="Four Wheel Drive">4x4</ACRONYM>, with the intentions of converting my 1986 F250 2WD to 4 wheel drive. I got the D60, Sterling, <ACRONYM title="ZF 5 speed manual transmission">ZF5</ACRONYM>, and 7.3 all for 600 bucks. The guy I bought the stuff from pulled it himself, I think his favorite tool was the cutting torch. He cut every bolt, bracket, cross member, and everything els you could think of to make it hard on me. Ill get a pic up of the carnage

My plan is to swap the <ACRONYM title="ZF 5 speed manual transmission">ZF5</ACRONYM> in place of my C6 first, to aquire the transfer case and overdrive. Im planning on using a LuK clutch and SMF. I bought a crossmember from an automatic <ACRONYM title="Old Body Style">OBS</ACRONYM>, I think it can be used with the ZF. They have the same measurments so we'll see. Ill be ordering the clutch and flywheel hopefully when my next paycheck comes but yall know how that is.

After the tranny is in, I get to do the cool stuff. Im planning on going through the D60 with new bearings, seals etc...the plan is to use either PMF or Sky's RSK with V code <ACRONYM title="Super Duty">SD</ACRONYM> springs, havnt decided which kit to go with yet. Im pretty sure the draglinks are bent up from rough housing with a tractor, thanks to the guy I bought it from. I need to research making my own out of DOM tubing, but ill figure something out. any suggestions?

lll be asking alot of questions that may sound dumb to yall, but be patient with me. Im young and doing this on a highschool budget. any help is much apprieciated, ill keep yall posted on how its going

Man, you lucked out on that gold mine. $600 bucks for all of that, That's a steal and a half! I'm so jealous. :-arrgh Nice rigs. I myself just swapped the tranny in my truck, so I know how ya feel. I'm young and dumb too. If it wasn't for my dad, I would still be working on the tranny. This stuff is second nature to him. Good luck on the swap.

You definitely got a hell of deal though!

You didn't want the shackles anyways, they wouldn't have been any help. The tierods/draglink have bends in them from the factory, so they may not actually be damaged. Compare them to pictures, or another vehicle to see. I'm not sure that the crossmember you got will work. Someone just went through that a little while ago, there may have been some pictures in that thread showing a few different crossmembers.

Did you get the transfer case shift linkage? I can't tell from the pictures.

looks as though your purchase also came with a 4" lift. i see those are not the stock front springs and i see additional blocks in the back...

btw i thought 93 would have been serpentine belt.... just an observation.

Ill try to get a pic of the draglink and crossmember I bought. Its one of those that mounts on the outside of the frame on one side, and on the inside on the other. I bought the shift linkage out of a junkyard, it looks new.

Rxracer, I was wondering about that. With the stack of springs on the front that it came with, thats a 4 inch lift? I have a buddy that wants them, we just dont know how tall his truck will be. And how much would the lift be worth?

heres my junkyard finds. The dimentions on this crossmember are the same as my buddys truck with a ZF5, so i think it will work. At least thats what I think

Lucky for finding a crossmember, i had to do some modifying on my stock E4OD and extend it forward for the zf swap.

only thing about the springs is hoping they didn't get damaged when the truck rolled, as long as they are in good shape i don't see why you couldn't get 250 or so out of them.

Did you use an RSK when you did the conversion? Im looking into which kit to get.

Also, did you box the front of your frame? If you did, how? I know im gonna have to box my frame to mount the front shackles

I pretty much made it up as I went. The idea was similar to the RSK kit, but done differently, and incorporating a front hitch to tie the two frame rails together.

I did not box the frame. I did remove the piece from a donor truck, but was running low on time, and wasn't very sure of my welding skills at that point in time. If I ever find the time to redo it with the superduty springs I have, I'll probably box the frame as well.

Do you have coil springs at the moment? Have fun removing all the rivets to remove those brackets and the radius arm brackets. The RSK kit(or similar) will do the fronts, but do you have brackets for the rear of the springs?
