360 timing

Alright boys, down to the final steps!! My son and I have replaced the valve seals, lifters, pulled the intake, replaced water pump, fuel pump etc etc- Truck is a 74 f100 360, C6 and all original. Sticker says 3 degrees BTDC, is this the recommended timing or should it be higher? Thanks all.

According to my Clymer manual, 69-72 FEs are timed at 6° BTDC and 73-75 FEs are to follow the timing indicated on the valve cover decal.

Congrats on your project getting ever so close...:-X22

Thanks, Right now it is around 8-10, seems to like it but I will take it down to 3 and see how she likes it. Only the interior, brakes, paint and a few other things left. Good thing we have another year or two :}

The factory specs are geared more towards emissions than performance, FE's generally like 10-12 initial, so i'd leave it where you have it, or even bump it up slightly.

Just don't exceed 36-38 total or you risk detonation, do you know which advance slot your distributor is using? 10L 13L 15L etc?

No, to be honest I am not sure what that means. It is all stock and I put the distributor back so it was in the same location. It does have the optional duraspark ignition.

Those numbers are stamped on the advance slot (located under the distributors breaker plate), they tell you how much mechanical advance you have...

10L=20 degrees
13L=26 degrees
15L=30 degrees

Example: 10 degrees initial with the 13L advance slot (26 degrees mechanical) equals 36 degrees total.
