Newbe looking for 7.3 PS info
 

Hi – I just purchased a 2000 F-350 dually 4x4 7.3 with 105k on it. I am not familiar with the 7.3 power stroke and what to look forward to in repairs. How long will the transmission last? Do the turbo hoses blow off like the 6.0’s? Will it ever leave me stranded on the side of the road? What spare parts should I carry? Any other items that you think would be helpful. This was a one owner <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttps://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/ /><st1:State alt=</st1:State>Arizona</ST1:p truck. It is very very cleanJ What common mods are done to the engine? It already has intake, exhaust, gauges & a tuner.

I have had 4 different 6.0’s 04 f-350, 05-f-250, 06-f350 and d 05-Excursion and have replaced ficm’s, egr’s, oil coolers, fuel pumps and starters in them all after 100k. I also had a veggie stroke installed on my excursion. I also currently own 2 7.3 idi’s 1990 & 1994 that I love due to ease of maintenance and cost. Both of them have over 300k. The oldest one loves to eat used motor oil, gear oil and tranny fluid for fuel.

Transmissions vary. If yours is holding up, you should most likely get another 100k out of if pending anything weird or caused by your driving.

The boots can blow off, but usually not a problem once installed properly.

Anything can leave you stranded on the road, so that is a unreal question to answer.

A CPS is always a good thing to have in the glove box, pretty cheap too @ $20 now.

Search on here for common mods and things to carry. There have been quite a few threads started here that explain it all. If the search function on here doesn't provide good results, use google and search there with a + Ford Truck Enthusiast.

A spare CPS is good to have, plus a 10mm socket to install it. Was a common cause of sudden failure but more recent versions of the CPS appear more reliable but less effective. Transmissions last a long time if not overheated, but they often get overheated so they have a undeserved rep as a weak link. So watch that trans gauge when towing heavy and slow. The best upgarde is a 6.0 cooler, so grab one off your other rig and put it on your 7.3. :-X04 The IC hoses can blow off especially after being disturbed or high boost, but a little hairspray on the tube after a rub with sandpaper does the trick for me.

Good clean oil and fuel is critical, so change those filters and fluids. Also Hutch/Harpoon mods are beneficial.

What kind of tuner is it?

I think there was a recall on the CPS a while back, I would check to see if that was done. Will you be towing? Your 2000 has a small Trans cooler and no trans temp gauge. If towing upgraded to a 6.0 trans cooler it really comes in handy when towing.

I have 135k on mine and my trans is still good (knock on wood)

I would get all the fluiids and filters changed right away, including a trans flush.. Was your new used truck ever chipped or programmed? May be good to know. I have never blown a boot... The only extra part I carry around is a serpentine belt.

Aftermarket Cam Position Sensors are not the most reliable and while they may last, it may not be worth the $3.00 to gamble unless you keep another spare.

I'll just bet he can't keep these on the shelf.

Nibor - Yes... do concentrate on the transmission cooling. I have read a lot about how substandard the torque converter and the valave body are. Mine went at 235K when I was doing something stupid, but it would have gone much farther if it had the mods to protect it and a driver that knew how to treat it. A proper chip, understanding transmissions, a transmission temperature gauge, and a well-designed cooling system (not just the 6.0 cooler alone) will go far to allow you to go far.

It came with a Hypertech programmer economy, tow & performance. I have not played with it yet. It is currently set for economy.
I will keep an eye on the tranny. It does have a temp gauge and I should have Amsoil fluid in it by Tuesday. Currently I only tow 10k or less but this is <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comhttps://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/ /><st1:State alt=</st1:State>Arizona and it should be 112 come Monday. Just ordered a titan 67 gallon fuel tank for it and should have that installed next week also. I am contemplating installing an Excursion tank in back for road trips as I get a fill up a week at work J
