93 - clutch release bearing install
 

93 Ranger, 4.0 liter, 4WD

Putting in a new clutch and clutch release bearing, and am wondering if I need to put the retaining ring in that came with the new clutch release bearing? When I took off the old release bearing, a ring did come off from somewhere, but I did not see where it was because it was so dirty.

The reason I ask is because my Haynes manual did not even mention a ring, so I was surprised to see one come off. And my manual does not say to reinstall the ring when installing the release bearing. I did get a newer Haynes manual at the library and looked through a bunch of Chilton, etc manuals. The newer Haynes manual says to remove the retaining ring on 97 and newer models, but says nothing about putting it back in when reinstalling. So, I am not certain if I need to put a new retaining ring in with the new release bearing.

I hope you're replacing the slave while you're in there.

X2... replace the entire unit not just the bearing. Just don't purchase the cheapest slave you can find.

Beyond that the retaining ring is usually a spiral clip and attaches on the groove on the end of the slave snout

Does a new slave cylinder come with the throw out bearing? I am going down and see what I can get.

How much should a good slave unit cost?

They can be bought either way, with or without the bearing.

I think Perfection at Advance Auto us a good unit or the rebrand unit at NAPA. Can't beat the Motorcraft unit, but it's well over $100.

Thanks. I had to run an errand this morning so I stopped at the nearest parts store and they had a slave that came with the bearing for $50. We do have NAPA in town, but I fear to see what their prices are. I know they have good quality parts, but the economy has not been kind to me. Is Advance Auto an online retailer because I have never seen them here in the northwest?

Since I already have the bearing I got with my clutch kit maybe I can find a slave unit without it for a little cheaper. Or am I just asking for trouble?

When you replace a slave does that make for more of a headache to bleed the system?

It isn't too bad as long as you don't let the reservoir run dry while bleeding the slave.

You just gravity bleed...

Advance auto is also Western Auto in some spots. I think napa wants about $10-20 more for their slave over Advance even though they are both made by Perfection.

The suggestion to replace the entire slave is more a preventative measure an since you have everything apart it is a "might as well" type of thing.

If the slave you have now looks in great condition you could by all means continue using it.

Thanks, I will probably just replace the whole slave. It will give me peace of mind when I am 20 miles from the nearest highway.

I am going to pull the old slave and look at it, but I would have no idea how to tell whether it is still any good. Then I am going to get serious about shopping for a new slave unit.
