I believe they work if you change the distributor gear .

351c / 351m / 400m / 429 / 460 interchange .

I went with an HEI for my 351m $46.00 complete - delivered .

The short story is : when I bought my 78 f150 the man had just put a master built engine in it (351m) he replaced the distributor when the engine was replaced said he had a heck of a time getting it in the block and the plug wires are wired like no ford engine I have ever seen( and I've seem quit a few) truck starts fine, runs ok but seems weak Just wondering if he put the wrong distributor in it? Every part I have bought I have to say 400 or I get small block parts

The 351w distributor is different than the 351c-351m-400-429-460. It may be similar in height, as the 351c is about the same deck as the 351w.

A different part number is shown here:

Ford DUI - Street/Strip Version

Napa shows NRD 482893 for the 351m, and NRD 482895 for the W.

I do not know the difference, and I do not have the Ford parts info available.

I'd say if someone hammered a 351w distributor into your 351m, you will soon be having major troubles, like a chewed up cam gear or worse.

Same dizzy, different gear.

That makes sense. If you forced the W dizzy/gear into the M, would it work at all? Or would it be a slow death, with lots of metal in the oil?

I eyeballed a 351w and a 351m dizzy sitting side by side the last time I read that the gear was the only difference and that looked like that was the only difference .

From what I remember there was a noticeable difference in the gears , ie , not even close , but if the hammer was big enough ????

You should be able to drive out the pin and swap gears .

Used dizzys are dirt cheap and remanufactured are what $40 ?

As I remember he said it was tight going in the hole and not the gear I don't have metal in my oil it just seem week for a new engine and the plug wires are what really have me confused. I thought maybe he had the firing order messed up so I dug my books out and it not like any firing order I can find I'll get a picture up and see what you all think I'll mark the wire to what cylinder they are going to

Asked this a while back and the gear is the main difference. Also been led to believe that the dizzy shaft length is slightly longer on the windsor stuff and there is the potential for the oil pump drive shaft to be too long. Sounded logical as if it was just a straight swap, the distributor manufacturers would just swap them and sell them as such. There are a couple of nice new dizzies out there that are windsor only.

This was a stock rebuild? If the firing order were off, it would run real rough, maybe backfire, and shake badly.

Stock 351m motors are not powerhouses. They are barely more power than the 300 six of that era. What were you expecting and what are you comparing to?

weldworks54 06-13-2012 09:28 AM

Yes it is a stock rebuild I've had some stock 302 that seem more power than this 351m I know they were more-a-less a work engine it just seems week my just be me? I'm use to 460's and 6.6L 400's like I said it runs fine It just hit me about the guy having a hard time putting the distributor in and the problems I've had buying part and the parts store giving me 351w instead of 351m parts just made me wonder if they had givin him the wrong distributor?

supertuff 04-17-2014 08:11 PM

the distributor in my 351m has a vacuum pull off that seems to be to big. approx 3" in dia,. it hits the block when you try to turn it and it stops from going further. any thoughts what the distributor is from. yes, before you say it , thinkin i better change it.
