Misfire but no codes
2003 Ford Expedition 5.4 ltr Triton is having a misfire but do not get codes mechanic says. He does get a P1780 Transmission Control Switch but does not believe this will cause the misfire. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Either ride it hard to force the code to appear or take a drive with a scanner attached that reads live data. With the scanner you will be able to see the misfire in real time.

I had the same thing happen to me and it ended up being a lazy COP. The only way we pinpointed it was to do what Alloro said and drove around with a scanner hooked up.

What is a "lazy COP"?
Thanks. |

Thanks. Seriously, it's COP that is just starting to fail and the rate and incidence of misfires is not severe enough to set a fault code yet. Plenty of previous threads - SEARCH keywords "+low +grade +misfire" or similar. |
Thanks. I did read about the misfire but most people get a code. I believe I have to take my mechanic out for a drive to get a readable code. I now know what a COP is... Coil on Plug.

You don't get a code until the misfire passes a certain threshold.
If you read my posts regarding this from several years ago, you'll know what to tell the mechanic. |
Update:
Let me first say... I did a lot of reading and researching. Since advice given here and on many other posts, problem was a COP. Ordered eight new plugs on ebay from global-automotive at a total cost of $65. Had mechanic put in for $60 and everything is running smooth (also bought small tube of dielecrtic grease). Problem fixed. I have put on about 400 miles and still no problems. Thanks to everyone who gave advice on this post and other posts as well!! |
