6.0 2007 oil filter cap (help)

Finally got to change the oil and fuel filters of my new (to me) 2007 f250. After reading several posts about it I just decided to buy all filters from the Ford dealer and give it a try.

Im thinking previous owner had put after market filters. I have a concern now. something don't feel right...when Im trying to put the new filter using the same oil filter cap. Is this the original cap? or it is a different one since the old filter itself is different. Also I noticed that inside the cap there is a plastic plate that rotates..is this part of the old non factory filter that needs to to be taken out? Can you tell if this the original filter cap by just looking at the picture?

I have put 12 qts. of oil already and just placed the new filter and used the same cap half way down. Im waiting till tomorrow monday to go to the Fprd dealer and compare/ask there...mean while i wanted to ask you all opinions.

The fuel filter(s) are in place but I haven't primed as recommended yet. In fact i don't want to start the truck until I am sure I have the right oil filter cap. Some help/advice is appreciated. Thanks.

truck has 214k ,bought oil from the dealer as well. They sold me 15qts, 15w-40 but have put only 12 and the stick reads almost half...question...is that reading going to go down after i crank the engine and then will have to add another 2 qts (for a total of 14 qts..). thanks.

(I'm trying to post pics from my phone)

There is nothing that spins or rotates inside the factory correct oil filter cap.

Check this thread and the others that it references for photos of the correct cap. The dealer you bought the oil from will have one, although you may find it cheaper elsewhere they will get it to you quickest.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-look-for.html

When you change your oil start out with 13 qrts let it sit and then check the level. Each truck is a little different. No one knows why but lots of posts on here over the years with guys swearing that their trucks takes 13 - 13.5 - 14 qts etc.

The manual says it takes 2 qts to move the level from the 'add' mark to the 'full' mark on the dipstick so use that as a guide for topping off.

Your picture just came through in your post. That cap looks correct. Something must be left up in there from a previous wrong filter setup. Remove it and you should be all set.

The new filter snaps up into the lid and then you can lower the lid and filter together into the housing. Same when it comes out ... it will come out by lifting the lid and filter will come too.

LOL ... each time I read your thread there is another picture :D

Now I see that thing inside the cap. That should not be there. Try prying it out. You've nothing to lose if you break it. It's the wrong one anyways if it doesn't come out. Correct lid has a small circle at the top to receive the new filter .. it'll snap in. If in doubt bring it to the dealer tomorrow.

If Hasnt been started yet you can add another qt easy

Yes start truck let it run a minute or 2

Your Oil Leval will drop some when you start the Truck because the OIL Filter Housing is Empty. And that alone will take 1-1.5qt

After you start let sit 10-15minutes for the Oil Leval to stabilize and then top Off

I use 14qt to do my truck any more and Get that famous bell housing drip and the BedPlate seeping oil a little

14qt bell house and all that stays dry as a BONE

The way the truck works if it runs short on oil it will shut down long before any damage

Just a little Peice of mind for you^^^^^^

Man that old oil filter looks dirty. Keep the engine happy and change the oil every 5K.

Abram 06-04-2012 10:26 AM

....Indeed,...thinking changing at 3k then go back to 5k using rotella. That way I can recycle that old dirty oil still on it. I put 13 qts of motorcraft 15w40....but thinking rotella on my next oil change...how do you guys like the motorcraft oil after all. Thanks x the replies.

For optimum fuel economy and all around performance, these engines like either 10W30 or 5W40 CJ-4 rated engine oils.

Although a little late, yes the cap you have is the correct factory oil filter cap, but you figured that out yourself already.

As far as oil change interval, I change my oil every 5,000 kms. (that's 3,000 miles for you 'Mericans). In so doing, the engine oil always looks clean when I drain it.
