Self-adjusters
 

I am looking to install self-adjusting brakes on my 60 f100, has anyone done this ? What years would fit ?, early 60's ? I have stock drums front and back. Thanks, Mark

I did it by installing a later model rear axle. They are easy to come by and cheap. Lots of advantages.... gearing etc. Last night I replaced the wheel cylinders on my '92 axle in my '59. They were in stock at napa for $15.65 each, and that's for a one ton. Actually last night was the first time I ever dealt with a brake job with self adjusting brakes. Sort of clever how they work, but lots of fussy little parts....Still better than crawling under the truck and trying to remember which way to turn the spoon :-X19......

Yeeeaaahhh buddy.

Self adjusters were not available for F100's until 1964. These self adjusters only work (if they work at all!) when you back up and step on the brake pedal.

The adjuster cable (there are 4, one inside each drum) is notorious for snapping. This may allow the cable guide to float around inside the drum.

What happens when this little charmer gets between the shoe and drum and you then step on the brake pedal?

The cable guide chews the hell oughtta both the shoe and drum. And, the adjustment wheels rust up, rendering the whole set up inoperable. NAPA once sold a kit to remove the pesky self adjusters.

Forgetaboutit! IMO, they're more trouble than they're worth.
