Follow-Up on 1986 150 Purchase

Here is a follow-up from my previous post:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...me-advice.html

It looks like the guy will take my offer of $4,700.00. It may seem high but if you saw the underneath of this truck I think you'd be sold on it. Not an once of rust. Remember I'm in the Northeast and we don't see things like this very often.
So I just have a few more questions. Is this a good engine combo (5.8 HO & C6) for this year (86)? The dash pieces are mint and uncut, but the seller is including another complete set...I think he said it was Rosewood? Are there different types of woodgrain options for this generation trucks?
The only thing left to do is get a shipping company to arrange to get it back here to CT (about 250 +/- miles) as I don't feel like driving it and finding myself broken down far from home. Meanwhile, here are a few pix..not the best, but just to give you an idea. Please feel free to let me know what you think!

Looks nice and clean. 5.8L/C6 combo is pretty tough, probably won't get super gas mileage, but should pull or haul anything within reason.

That is a very good looking truck! I think you are going to be pleased.

As for the interior, what you have is Burlwood, which is correct for that truck. The earlier years had Rosewood. If you are getting a good set of Rosewood you can sell it as good Rosewood is hard to find. In fact, I might be interested.

As for shipping, I beg to differ with your approach. I would sign up for AAA Gold, wait a week for it to kick in, and then drive it home. Gold gets you something like 4 free tows of up to one hundred miles each. Worst case and it dies in his driveway, you'll still have one free tow left.

And, Bill is right, the 5.8/C6 combo is tough. The 5.8L that year was known as the 351 HO and sported a Holley 4180 and had no computer. Fairly easy to maintain. But, it won't get great mileage. The one I owned didn't run so I parted it out and didn't find out what mileage it got. But, the '82 351W with a 2 bbl and C6 got 12.5 MPG on the highway with its 3.50 gears.

Thank you guys, for all the advice & support...Yea, I'm partial to the 351/AT combo. I've had that on nearly all my trucks to date (about 16) except for 1 1996 150 with a 4.9 which I hated! The mileage was close if not the same to a 5.8 believe it or not. So I'm calling the owner tom'w and will start the ball rolling. As far as AAA goes, I've already got AAA Gold and believe me, those guys lose money on me! Gary, you're right-I get 6 free tows up to 100 miles per with no charge. The only reason I don't want to use that path is because the route I'd be taking will be over the GW and that is a virtual nightmare in an vehicle that I'm not sure of. Plus, I'd be driving thru the Bronx which is about as close to hell on earth as you'd want to see. A breakdown there would be tragic and the truck would get stripped in less than 20 minutes.
Gary, after I get settled I'll PM you regarding that Rosewood stuff that the owner is throwing in. Thanks again!

:-X06 I also saw that truck at Spring Carlisle, It looks just as nice in person as it does in the pics.

Initially I thought you meant the George Washington Parkway in the DC. But, you mean the George Washington Bridge. I agree about not taking it there or through the Bronx! :-X18

Yea, the seller seemed to be a decent guy, not shady. Did you talk to him about it at all? I'm very surprised that he didn't sell it there, but I've always maintained that cars rarely sell at Carlisle, parts do.
Plus, IIRC, he was asking 6k at the meet...not many are willing to shell that kind of $$ these days.

I did not talk to him , but we did walk around the truck a few times admiring it. Very nice. Happy for you!

Sounds like the truck is in the Philly area. And, you said you are in CT? I'm just picturing in my mind the route. Used to live SW of Philly (Kennett Square) and made it up through NYC many times. And, I've been to Carlisle many times - although that was in my MOPAR days.

It's too bad one end or the other isn't closer to me. I would borrow a trailer and haul it.

Did Matt happen to comment on the truck? He surely saw it at Carlisle. Just looking for more input for Roger.

Was it at Carlisle last year? If it was he may have seen it.

Pretty sure that's what Roger said.

Roger T. Pipe 05-21-2012 09:22 PM

Yes, it was at this past Spring Carlisle in late April...here's a crummy pic I took of it there...
