16x7 vs. 18x9
 

Doing a suspension upgrade through Cary at CT Performance
and need new tires. Considering 285 on current 16x7 stocks or
285 on new 18x9 (ATX Artillery) wheels.

Looking for thoughts from the tire & wheel guys.
There are those that say the X stability benefits from the
wider 9" rim. I also suspect there will be less sidewall
flex and maybe better wear pattern. The tires will be BF AT/Ko.

Many posters on here have put 285s on 7" wide 16" rims. Most tire websites do not recommend going that wide on 7" width rims. What aspect ratio are you looking at? 65 series? A lower aspect ratio (than stock 75) will probably improve the steering precision.

The factory option that was never delivered was the 18x8 wheels (like on 04 King Ranch F250), with 275-65/18. Michelin website recommends 7.5 - 9" rim width for the 275 mm width tire. For 285 mm width, they recommend 8 - 10" rim width, so your 9" selection is just right.

I have 315s on stockers, and while they do fit, and they do work, they feel squirrely and I can't wait to get something else.

I want 12" rims, and bigger tires, but I'm probably going to get 12" rims first then bigger tires later.

Sounds like I'll go with the 18x9s. I like the ATX Artillery - saw it on one of Cary's trucks at CT Performance in a pick he sent me.

I think the 285s on 18"s come out close to 33" - Will be no problem with the suspension upgrade I'm getting from Cary at CT.

I have the 285`s on the factory X (XLT) wheels. they fit and look good. they wear great. however because I tow a heavy TT I will probably go back to the 265`s in the BFG Rugged Trail T/A or Commercial T/A Traction load range "E".

So my plan now is to go with the ATX Artillery Chrome 18x9 wheels and the BF Goodrich T/A KO 285/65R18.

That should make the tires about 33"s if the metric calculator is correct.

I think Cary at CT is upgrading me to the X code springs for the front since I'm putting a Ranch Hand number on.

I calculate 32.6", which is only 2.9% larger in diameter than stock 265/75-16 tires. Should be a great combination.

That makes me think I should just go with the 35s. If the 33s
Are only a little larger than stock I'll have some empty looking
wheel wells after the suspension upgrades.

What size would the 35 be on an 18 rim?

Just don't forget you'll change (lower) RPM with bigger tires. This usually reduces torque and power at a given speed.
