Empty Weight...
I was surprised at how light my recently purchased van is empty. Its a 1995 E150 Club Wagon with a 5.8L and an E4OD. I am ordering new custom springs and needed to know the empty weight. With a full tank of gas and my big ass it was under 4700lbs. That leaves over 2300lbs of payload. That's rather insane for what should be a 'half ton' vehicle. My E-Super box has crushed the scales at 19,500lb. Even empty its close to 10k.
Anyone else ever pull their van across a CAT scale? |
yes, my '93 E350 5.8 E40D is 6100 with just a few tools and mostly empty cabinets. There's around 400 lbs in there maybe a little less.
My fully stocked '03 E350 5.4 E4OD service van is 8,000 lbs every day. |
Mine is 6600-7000 with me and most of my tools / ladders...but I have been around 11000 more than a few times , with stone or shingles / rubber ....my engine alone is 1000 lbs

I used Waste Management's scales once---free of charge too! :)
I just bought an 03 E250 extended body, completely empty apart from the factory rear sponge errr mat I mean. My first stop when bringing it home will be weighing it with a half tank of fuel to get a base line before refitting it for my work truck. The current work truck tips the scales at 7800# with me and a half tank, loaded as it normally sees daily duty. It does have the fiberglass raised roof but I'm thinking my lighting, high-mounted rear heater and plywood/ABS ceiling panels more than makes up for the loss of metal in the factory roof. I'll update this once my newer van is home. |
I haven't taken mine over to the scales yet, but I'm dying to find out. Mine's not empty being that it's a conversion van, but I'm hoping that I don't weigh much more than 5000 lbs. We'll see. :-X0A6

mine weighs 8000 with all my equipment in it.
for those who have trouble finding a scale, here's a few points to start: truck scales along the highway, recycle yards, truck stops, quarries, and probably just about any other place that truckers load up every day, as they want to be as close as they can to their GVW without being over. not all of these are friendly to people randomly dropping in, but for the roadside scales (used for enforcement), any time they're closed, they're open for you. for recyclers, toss a couple hundred pounds of scrap steel in the back of the truck and sell it to them, they'll weigh you on the way in and on the way out |
My 02 E-150 4.6 low top Eclipse weighs 5,200, I had a 75 Cougar XR-7 that tipped the scales at 4,750. I bet the van would out run the 351w Merc..........

Yes, there is a recycler about two miles down the road from me. I'll go when I get a chance but the van is going through puberty right now (major overhaul). I'll get it weighed soon.... |
i used to have an 83 LTD (midsize model, same as a mustang) that weighed 4300 with all my stuff in it.
and one day i had 3 people ask me how many dead bodies were in the trunk... that happened to be the day after the air shocks blew out :) |
Just brought the new-to-me '03 E250 extended body, completely empty cargo bay except the factory mat. Caterpillar Certified scales say my total weight 1/2 tank of fuel & no occupants is 5300#.
This will go up considerable when outfitted as my work truck so it'll be interesting to watch those numbers change. |
Hmmmm, this makes me want to make a trip to a quarry close to me, my ownership on my van says it weights 5900lbs empty.
|
I found a sticker inside the rear doors (from the conversion company?- Elk Automotive) in our 03 E250... says weight is 55xx lbs, then lists the maximum passenger + cargo weight to bring it up to the 7000 lb gross weight max.
I was hoping to get it weighed at the Mobility shop last week, but forgot to ask:( then would have an idea if the 55xx number is close. We have the lift and 1 transfer seat base mounted inside, along with the 1 rear seat that folds flat like a futon... |
Mark am I misreading your numbers there? We both have '03 E250's (mine is ext body) and our max GVW should be 8600#. IIRC along with your lift and seat you have fiberglass wheel flares/running boards too?
John your registered weight of 5900# is probably spot on---if its your War Wagon the E350 and extended body would add that 600# over my bare & empty E250, extended body. |
I have "questions", too, but nothing definite for answers at this point.
I'll try to get some pictures (later) of the various "stickers" and post them up... I was surprised to see the 7000 gvw after reading on this forum [somewhere] that E250 is 8600 gvw??? Yes, our van has the fiberglass flares and running boards, but no "middle" seat. It also has a heavy steel "shield" under the gas tank and an extra [dead] battery under the floor 'way in the back (now disconnected, hopefully soon to be removed). Mark |
Here's my door sticker tag:
