4.9 np435/t18 swap
 

hey guys i have a 1986 f150 4x4 with the old 300 and im trying to plan all this out before i buy the trans. i have a few questions about this whole swap.

1)is the spline the same between a tremec rts and say a np435 or t18?

2)when swapping from the tremec to the t18 or np435 will i have to mess with a new transmission crossmember?

3) my truck is a 4x4 so between the transmission and the transfer case will i need to bother with the length of my driveshaft?

if anybody has any input to my cause it would be appreciated

Let me make sure - you have a Tremec?

yes i have a tremec rts 3 speed with overdrive. would i be able to use the same bell housing for both?

are the clutches splined the same?

I can't answer that question. I wasn't aware a Tremec RTS was ever used in these trucks. The Ford Master Parts Catalog lists the following as the only manual transmissions up through '86: 3-speed; SROD; NP435; T18: T19.

Has that tranny been swapped in?

not it is the stock tranny

So, I can't answer your question. I have no clue what the shaft size and spline count is. You should have told us it wasn't stock to start with.

The Tremec also goes by the name of Clark and may even be referred to as the RAT/RUG, I really don't know for certain as we don't see it out here real often. Ralph knows a lot about it and could maybe explain if he were to stop by.

In any event, my understanding is that the 4-bolt bell housing pattern will accept any manual transmission used in this era, the spline count is the same all around (keeps Ford from having to use different crankshafts for different transmissions).

The parts catalog says the tranny mount crossmember is the same 1985/87 4WD pickups & Broncos although it wouldn't surprise me if its location needed to be adjusted and the driveshaft needed to be changed to accommodate it.

From what i've read...you may be referring to either the RTS or RUG. The RTS, I think commonly referred to as an SROD and the RUG being a top loader type.

In the article I read, they were manufactured by Tremec, but not marketed as a Tremec transmission...simply assembled by them.

You will need to get a transmission code or something before you'll ever know for certain what you have.

Camo....as an FYI, all the information I've been able to find to help you, I found on Google. You need to try to find some of this on your own please.

We all love to help but you need to help yourself a little first. All I had to do is google ford f150 tremec and found out what I posted above.

Like Chris stated above...if you go to the Tremec web site, you won't find this transmission. It was contracted out by Clark to tremec of Mexico for assembly. So all the literature will be found under Clark....Including the Ford Master Parts Catalog

Ok, my mistake. Learn something everyday, and hopefully several things today. Thanks, guys, for setting the record straight.

dont give up on it, i did this same swap last year on my 86 f150 4.9, 4x4 with the 3sp overdrive. the t18 will bolt up to your motor just fine. the cross member will work good for the t18 and your drive shaft is fine as long as you use your current tcase and tail shaft adapter. hope this helps you out

does the transfer case off the 3 spd with overdrive bolt right up to the t18?

Any transfer case should bolt to any 4WD transmission.

I forget the two transfer cases used - BW1345 and an NP variant, I think.
