SUPERCHARGE MY DIESEL

ok i know u guys are all about the turbos, im not worried about fuel efficiency or power loss, its a show truck. i would really like to get a oldschool supercharger for my 6.9idi oldschool truck. so that being sed, anybody got any input on what to use and or where to get it :-huh

thanks for any input that doesnt invalve trying to sell me on turbos. (i allready know there better, thats not the point here)

I think you will be almost 100% on your own. Can you weld good enough to make yourself an intake manifold out of aluminum tubing?

I know what you're talking about--nothing looks quite like a big bad blower on top of a motor. An 8-71 or 14-71 would make that old dog bark....but it just isn't going to come out of a box.

Sorry, this dream is pre-crushed imo.

im a fabricator for cummins engine, so im good on that. i really just need starting point and general direction to go with it.

OK, how about this. Check the dimensions of your motor. Compare them to the larger gas motors that you know you can get a blower manifold for. (FE, 385 & 335 Fords, BBC, Hemi, etc)

Looks like there is no water in your intake. That's a bonus.

Once you find a manifold that will sit between your heads and that is close as far as bore spacing, make adapter plates like the plates that allow a 351C manifold to be used on a 351M/400. Just a flat plate, cut at the angles needed with holes angled from the manifold port to the head port. You could do it in your back yard with a drill and a file....:-X04

OR you could marry that intake to part of a stock 6.9 intake.

Measure your crank snout and see if it's the same as any blower pulleys for any of the above engines. Have one made if not. You'll have to figure out accessory drives along the way.

Find out if you can crank up your injector pump, or get larger injectors.

There's more but I can't think of it now.

:-X22 now thats more better, i can work with that. thanks for the heading.

I could swear that I saw Banks doing a Roots-type blower build on 6.9/7.3 recently somewhere. I'll see if I can't find it again.

bad a$$ roth 06-20-2012 09:01 PM

when i had my 7.3 thats exactly what i wanted to do....i really wish i coulda done it but please do this and support with pics. as far as advice id shoot for an 8-71 and build it like a gasser, custom headers, bigger valves, hybrid 466 injectors and look into ur timing and valve train, a supercharger might take ur heads off with the constant flow. unless u changed ur internals ur starting with 21.5:1 compression (unless its an 83which is 20.5:1) ive seen stock 7.3 run 15psi boost with no major problems and 6.9s will handle more for sure, head studs are gonna b a must and a bottom end girdle would b insurance, definantly gonna want to drop ur backing plate and run an allison or eaton tranny so mayb look into onboard air, thats wat i remember now. i really want to see this done on an idi.

Well, i found 1 article - but it's for the Bank's supercharging a duramax.

Cool article, but the writer makes an error on the HP/Torque. You can't have equal HP and torque at 6500 rpm. The HP/torque formula has the numbers equal only at 5252 rpm. Thus, if it makes 1500 ft/lb at 6500 rpm, it is making 1856.4 HP. If it is making 1500 HP at 6500 rpm, it is making 1212 ft/lb.

Those pistons remind me of my dad's 1957 Allis Chalmers WD-45. "Power Crater" is what AC called that design. Makes sense.

speedwrench72 03-10-2013 12:14 AM

u will want to shave .030 of of the pistons to drop compression..valve timeing very imprtant in diesel engines, with turbo's ,IE backflow, ect useing a super will open area's to think about,,u can over drive and use a waste gate to control boost..eary 6.9's had poor head bolts.. mounting will be difficult as it will block access to ip..it's a possibal maybe..:-jammin:-jammin

Heres 10 pages worth of info from a VERY smart man supercharging his Bronco w/ a 6.9. Hes also NOT lowering compression

OP had another thread, and in there is a link to an oilburner site with a long 7.3 SC thread:
