Adding Cruise Control
I have always wanted to have cruise on this truck but never thought to go to the Junk Yard to get it. Is it difficult to add to a vehicle that does not have it? Besides the steering wheel and throttle linkage what else would I need to get off the donor truck? Is it feasable or a waste of my time?

What are the specs on your truck? year, engine, trans?
I am hoping you have a 91 4.9L custom with the 5 speed. I am just saying, because I would like to do this for my dad's truck. |

Me too! Mine's the same truck, but a 1992.... |
I've been looking at this also since I have a parts truck with cruise. In the end my decision is to swap cabs due to damage on my project (not just to get cruise, LOL) so I'll have cruise without much other modification.
Here are photos of with/without cruise. As you see, the wiring is already under the hood for the cruise "servo" and the brake pressure switch. (Note: both of these trucks are 4.9L 5-speeds.) http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...TECH/Servo.jpg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ttlecables.jpg http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...0428121531.jpg Of course swapping your steering wheel (or getting another column w/tilt also ...see other projects here) will be necessary. I'd have to do more research to determine if the clockspring would need to be changed or if it's already cruise equipped. |
I changed my clock spring a few months ago and the new one has the additional wiring just not terminated. Is there a difference in the PCM or any of that?
|
I don't think so.

Different animal I know but I added cruise to my 2000 Interceptor with just the steering wheel and cruise servo/amplifier. It was pre-wired for cruise and the connector was just blocked off like this F150. The Vic already had the master cylinder switch though. |
I put it in my truck (96') with just the wheel and servo. I jumped out the pressure switch with an extra SPOUT plug I had from the parts truck. And the servo/linkage isn't engine specific.
Also if your looking to do the tilt wheel, the clolumn in the 92-96's are already tilt but missing the springs and lever. Plus the plastic with the hole in it for the lever to go through. You dont need to change the whole column. |
From what I'm reading....All that is needed is:
But is there anyway that the cruise can be wired into a regular rocker switch? I have a tilt wheel...Came out of my 1991 Crown Vic...But it's a non cruise model... |

So you just have to disengage it manually........
Actually the brake pedal switch is tied into the clutch switch so the one on the master is a redundant saftey.

Probably. I can post the wiring diagram if you'd like to try it. Lol
Btw, you're correct on the columns...They're all the same..give or take a few pieces...lol Also, I kinda have my CSS (Clutch Safety Switch) jumpered, because the switch actually failed.... Any issues there, or will it just be in the brake switch? |
The BOO and CSS are wired in series so your only means of deactivation would then be your BOO...not a big deal in my eyes. Lol

Looks like you may need some rheostats. Lol
