CV conversion done, what rear end?
Hey guys i just ran across this forum for the unibodys. Awesome!! Well i have a 62 Unibody that i have been messing with for about a year now.. Between kids baseball and cheerleading they keep me running and broke all the time.. I installed a 2004 crown vic front end out of a police interceptor ( 5x4.5) and now i need a rear end to match. I have heard of people using a rear end out of a 96-98 explorer and ones from a crown vic. Anyone have any comments on what would fit better (width wise)? Anyone have any pictures of these installs..Thanks For the help... I went to the lonestar Roundup in Austin this weekend and only saw about 4 unis out there so I'm pumped to get mine going...

I used a MN12 IRS under my bump with a CV IFS. Team321 LLC Ford Truck Independent Rear Suspension (321)960-5945 dheld@cfl.rr.com makes a mount kit that makes the install quite easy. It is quite a bit narrower than the CV IFS which allows for a deep dish type wheel on the rear. You can check out my build at https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...irs-build.html I have a pretty well detailed install of the IRS. There are several guys putting the IRS in the '48-'52 pickups and a few doing it in the '53-56 pickups as well. If it is something you would be interested in you should be able to locate quite a bit of info on the install.

Thanks elgemcdlf for the info. I have not ran across one of those swaps before it looks like it would ride amazing compared to the traditional solid axle , spring setup... I ll do some more reading on your build to see what all is completely involved in it.
Thanks 62 Unibody |
I'm waist deep in cv install but I'm also doing motor and trans upgrades as well I'm gonna run a 98 cv rear end for the same width. All depends on the wheels I suppose any pics of your swap

When I started on my journey I decided wheels would just be something custom built for the truck when finished. A note on the MN12 IRS. The bolt circle is 5x4.25. You can swap in hubs from a Cobra IRS with the rotors. You will also need a set of brackets that move the calipers out to clear the larger rotors. I also have a list of rotors that should work with the 4.5 circle & stock caliper location.
