Changed coolant, now I have a leak
 

Went from green to pink 6 months ago. Fluid is leaking from the top of the water pump. I'm thinking I need to re-torque the bolts. The pump was replaced 2 years ago by the prior owner and shortly after I bought the truck, I installed a coolant filter system. Any help or experience is appreciated.

Ya, re-torque the bolts. Other then that I don't know what to say. I've replaced two water and the gasket never leaked.

I was thinking that the ELC (pink) coolant was not recommended for use in our trucks because it would dissolve the seals and make things leak.....

Thats what I thought.
I did a quick google search and found this on TDS.
It is in the 99 SD forum, and talks about the ELC being red not pink...
But I am curious myself.

As for your leak issue... it could be the bolts. Or the coolant is bad for your gasket. :-X15

IIRC, red coolant is not advised.

I've heard of some guys using the gold though.

I use Fleet Charge, its not ELC and its pink.

I bought mine at 82K nine years ago with Gold in it. I dumped it right away.

So there's a NON ELC pink coolant? Fleet guard and by glenn's description it is pretty good.
And then there is an ELC pink coolant that isnt recommended for our trucks?

Gah.. I may have to search around for a coolant thread. Or start my own.

Fleet Charge NON ELC is a good one for our engines.
I did some reading. and there was an old guy on TDS named Gooch who seems to have a lot of stuff on coolant since he was a 'specialist'
I dont know what happened to get him banned.:-X15..if you have the story pm me id love to hear it.

But anyway on his coolant flush instructions on TDS it mentions ford factory recommendation for engines made prior and post to 2/2/99.

It has engines made pre- 2/2/99 that they dont recommend ELC coolants. That you get the conventional coolants and add recommended SCA levels. Or get the pre-charged and maintain the SCA levels.

Fleetguard Fleetcool was mentioned as one good coolant for our OBS engines.

That was another reason coolant filters are good. they are a slow method to have SCA additive get into the coolant. Its a way to maintain our cooling systems without actually doing anything. lol

Since were on the friggin' subject what should I put in my OBS? I was just going to stick some prestone (green) in it. Open to suggestions. Btw CAT dealer near me, no international. Whatever is easiest/cheapest with best heavy duty protection this is all new too me, checked out the link from powerstrokenation feel a lil more confused...

Found it. Leaking from the backside of the t-stat housing, strange it took this long to develop. I swapped 192 to 205 degree t-stat when when I changed the coolant with a new gasket.

Found a Murray and Motorcraft outlet tubes at Oreilly's. Gonna throw in a new gasket while I'm in there.
