Packed up the 'stroke and heading to Moab!

Should be there by tomorrow afternoon. A bunch of us are meeting, coming in from all directions.

This will be a shakedown trip for the 'Jeep' when it gets there and actually will end up being the first long distance one for the -350 after ironing out some details.

I'm heading out alone, but with some tools just in case!

I'm taking the 15 then the 70 out from Los Angeles. Wanted to give a heads up to all the fellow strokers incase I end up with an unexpected adventure along the way.

Wish me luck!

Nice rig. Is it on a deck-over or a flatbed on the truck? Good luck.

Moab...does that bring a serious OT memory! My grandfather was a mountain man in New Hampshire. All he ever did in his life was to hunt, trap, and fish (and refused to ever buy a hunting, trapping or fishing license). Never had a paying job. Anyway, I come home in 1969 just after the first moon landing by Neil Armstrong. I asked the old boy what he thought about men landing on the moon and he looked at me like I had sprouted a second head :-huh! He then says to me "You damn fool! They never landed anyone on the moon, the gov'mint filmed it all in Moab, Utah!" Of course, this came from a guy who, during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, hand dug a bomb shelter outside the kitchen window because "Damn communists had missiles in Cuba pointed at East Lempster, NH" (Population was about 20).

Beautiful rig...have fun and be safe!

Made it with no major issues! One rear tire has a slow leak and went down to about 60 before I pumped it back up with the jeeps onboard liquid CO2 system.
It's a fabricated flat bed bolted on with risers.

The ramps are utility ramps cut to half length and reinforced with heavy wall rectangle tubing on both sides. They are short enough that they are at a 45 degree angle when in the pockets I welded on the tail of the bed. Takes some of the bending moment out of the arrangement.

The engine that is in what once was a CJ8 is a fully polished LS1. In excess of 400hp. How much, I don't know.

Four wheeling in Moab... good stuff so I've heard. Gonna try Lions Back?

Lions back was closed back in 2007 unfortunately. It was always private property but the old owners allowed people on for a fee. The development has not happened. I believe the new owner went bankrupt but it's still blocked off. Can't even see tire marks on the rock any more.

Where I broke:

The axle carnage:

Took until after midnight to get it under it's own power and off the trail.

Broken 300m 1550 joint and yoke:

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i.../photo-188.jpg

Ball joint blown out of lower cup:

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/i.../photo-192.jpg

The CTM joint let go, knocked the ear off the inner yoke, wedged itself against the lower 'C' and pushed so hard on it that it pushed the axle up out of the normal position in the knuckle, blowing out the bottom cup and pushing the top balljoint all the way out of the knuckle and forcing the inner C open 1/2 inch.
We rented a couple of different vehicles, hooked up with another group of wheelers and had a great rest of the week.

The truck worked great though! Only issues were a slow leak in a rear tire that needed a nail puncture patched and a temperature gauge that I don't think was reading true:

Where we stayed at the end of the road

Miles past the end of the road and at the end of the dirt road. Across three creek crossings, through two private gates. No phone, no cell, no internet, no cable, no TV. Awesome. Should have seen the stars at night, incredible!

Nice crawler! Sucks about the carnage though.

We went to Moab a couple years ago for a week and had a blast. One day we spent 12 hours on Golden Spike/Poison Spider and made our exit in the dark, talk about butt clenching. Good times!

MOAB ROCKS!! :-jammin
