Why 6th gear b4 out of the driveway????
Not exactly. And, I love the truck. But, it seems at 40mph the things already in 6the gear. What are the shift points - 500 rpm: Will a tune fix the shift point????????????????
|
It all depends on load, throttle pressure etc. If you're barely on the skinny pedal doing 40, I can see it shifting to 6.
|
What's wrong with that? You don't like fuel efficiency? :-huh
|
It just seems like there's no option. I really don't get over 3000 rpm but, I would like to get to 40mph w/o seeing 6th. Perhaps I have to floor it to change. However, I still think it would find 6th waaaaay tooooo sooon.

It's certainly not what cars and trucks of the past have done, but why exactly don't you like it? |
I personally don't care what gear it's in at 40 as long as it's doing what it was designed to do.
|
To be honest - I like it. Mine does the same, it shifts into 6th at around 38 mph when under light load.
Today I tried it at a pretty steep hill: that truck held 6th gear all the way up at 40 mph. It is actually not necessarily the very best programming for fuel efficiency - dropping it to 5th at that hill makes the green bar go up a notch - but the truck is doing it just fine. |

Let me rephrase: Why is this unacceptable for you? What don't you like about it?
It's certainly not what cars and trucks of the past have done, but why exactly don't you like it? what *I* don't like about it is the immediate downshift to 5th that follows the slightest throttle tip-in. I also don't like the immediate upshift back into 6th when you let up. Staying in 4th or 5th at this speed would be much preferrable. if i had a truck with select shift, i would lock out 5th and 6th in town always. and if you tip in with any fevor at all, it takes forever for the truck to pick a gear and go ... staying in lower gears longer would improve drivability, IMO. it's MUCH worse when towing. just speaking for myself. |

A big portion of the throttle response is the built in lag of the drive by wire. This can be taken out with a good tune.

Okay, now I'm starting to get it. My dad has a 2010 with the 6R80 but I haven't driven it in awhile. I think that the programming is set like that to improve fuel economy, but of course this comes at the expense of throttle response. So the issue isn't that it shifts to 6th that soon but that it doesn't downshift fast enough?
throttle response is part of it, and the hesitation is a slight annoyance. but more than that is the shift frequency. i live on a hilly gravel road, and every road in town is hilly as well. On gravel i like to drive around 35ish. maybe 40 down the hills, maybe 30 up them ... just kinda set my foot on the gas and not care how fast i go. 30 means 4th gear, 40 means 6th.... so the whole way home is 4-5-6-5-4-5-6-5-4 .... no joke, in town is about the same, except i tend to keep a more steady speed, between 35 and 40, which will usually cause a 5-6-5-6 shuffle on every hill. I realize that this is being done in the name of economy, but the marginal gain in economy in trade for driveability is a bad trade. i will say that this is in a 2010, and the 11's and 12's may be better. |
Thank GOD for manual mode on the 2011's and later.

Just turn off the gear display and you won't notice as much.
|
I turned the gear display on today coming home from work for the first time. I noticed that at about 43 she shifts into 6th. At around 30 she's in 3rd looking for 4th. This thing shifts so smooth up and down that I would have no clue at to what gear I was in if not for the display.
