05 f250 6.0 ficm????????

Hello, i am new to the 6.0 world.
just bought (4 weeks ago) a 2005 f250 6.0 fx4. it is bone stock.
in the past week ago or so, it has gone down hill as far as power.
i let my step dad borrow it and he filled it up with diesel and now wont idle smooth and is losing power. it makes boost according to gauge( 20 psi) but hardly any acceleration. have changed both fuel filters with motorcraft. and no change. i don't have a fuel pressure gauge to read pressure. i have read about a ficm, can anyone tell me real life symtoms to follow.

thanks...

A super helpful moderator will be along shortly to move this to a more helpful 6.0 diesel forum. Meanwhile, take a look at the first few lines of this thread for FICM info.

it could be ipr and / or icp. possible probs. i would usually not assume it's the headgaskets first, because there are a bunch of things tat could have caused ur current situation besides the headgaskets issue.

also, please go to our tech folders. we have a procedure to test the ficm voltage. tats how ur gonna know if ur ficm is need of resurrection.

Checking for codes is a good place to start. It can have a code without a check engine light. Most of the auto parts stores (Advanced, AutoZone etc.) will check it for you if you don't have a code reader. A ScanGauge II is a great option also. Available at AutoZone or on-line. Not a good code reader, but you can see most of the engine's electrical functions like ICP and IPR as Snuggy mentioned. Sorta like buying a bunch of gauges all at the same time. It has 3 gauges for the FICM alone.
Usually FICM problems begin as a cold start/ cold idle issue and get worse from there. Check the Tech folder for instructions on how to check the voltage output with a multimeter. Not hard To do but you could use a helper to turn the key on/off.
