Transmission Options

I have a '58 F-100 with a 360 W (boring cylinders change the displacement) that I rebuilt. The major modifications I made to the motor are listed in my signature. I have a FMX transmission in it now that I haven't been satisfied with from day one.

I am very seriously considering changing to a manual transmission to get rid of my headaches.

I also have a '92 F-150 that has the 5 speed "mazda" transmission. I am considering getting another transmission like what is in my '92 for the '58. My main concern is how will the mazda trans hold up behind the built and bored 351 W.

Are there any suggestions of good manual transmissions for street driving with a little 'goosin' (and maybe the occasional burnout) every now and then?

Thanks for the input.

If it will hold up to the '92, it will hold up to the '58! It's not like you will try to do burn outs when you have the back ended loaded up with a ton of something!

I had a T-5 5 speed in my mustang behind a 408w that 456 ft/lbs at the wheels and ran low 11's in the 1/4 at 1.5 60' it was built up with a G-Force kit to hold up to the power
they are cable type clutch so no hydraulics to mess with
Hope this helps

Well I like the sounds of no hydraulics. What vehicle does this come out of? and I wonder if I will need to build up the tranny like you did for my setup. It's not near as wild as what you had in your mustang but it is stronger than stock by quite a bit I'd say. est. 350-400 hp

Mine was out of a 95 5.0 Mustang Gt all of the V8 mustangs from 87 to 95 had the T-5 just for future reference the 94-95 had a longer input shaft and a different bell housing the was deeper for the longer shaft length hope this helps

I wonder what the overall length of the trans is compared to a FMX. Also I wonder if it has the same amount of splines where the driveshaft slides in. thanks
