Does anyone else have Soot / Carbon buildup on tailpipe of their 6.2L ?

My DD 2011 F250 6.2L has definite soot buildup on the tailpipe (I have the chrome package, so it's got a chrome tip) and the RR corner of the back bumper is constantly discolored from the exhaust........I figured it was because the exhaust exits at an angle, and that the bumper was collecting more road grime due to the condensation/etc from the exhaust.........but maybe not. I'll take a pic later today and upload it. I am 99% positive I've seen a SLIGHT puff of black smoke a couple of times on hard take-off, (ie, slight being the size of a basketball, maybe, and I've only noticed it a couple of times).

Does anyone else have this going on??

Truck has 8800 miles on it, daily driven about 10 miles each way to work, and I'm not easy on it;) It is 100% stock, no tuner or intake.

I have some on the tailpipe, but that is normal. I have not seen any on my bumper though, and have never seen any black smoke either.

I have 9600 miles on my truck, and I haven't seen any soot on my tailpipe or bumper...but then again I baby this truck's gas pedal.

I think back to all the cars and trucks I've ever had, and I can't think of anything, aside from my 2 diesels, that ever had any soot on the exhaust........certainly nothing NEARLY this bad.

With all the sensors and emissions equipment on these trucks, I am pretty sure if something was awry, it would detect it and set off a CEL.

If its not really causing problems, I would just bring it by the dealership next time you need to get the tires rotated or have a multi-point inspection done.

That seems like a lot for a gasser, though I'm not sure what Ford considers normal for the 6.2L. I don't think it's a pressing issue (it might be something simple like an oxygen sensor out of whack), but I would bring it up next time you bring your truck in for service.

Are you using pure gas or does it have ethanol in it? I can see you having more of the black soot with the pure gas but that is a lot you have. I don't get that much, not even when I go 3 weeks between washes.

Jettix2 03-29-2012 09:55 PM

Pure gas, no ethanol. It's been 2 weeks since it was washed in that photo above. Only Shell or BP gas.

I don't have any of that going on. Then again I'm at highway speeds most of the time.

Do you let your truck idle a lot (like to warm it up in the morning for several minutes)?

Jettix2 03-30-2012 06:26 AM

Lots of short trips, but not a lot of idling.

RAPR 03-30-2012 08:26 AM

I let my truck idle every morning to make sure the engine is warm before driving and my drive to work is only 3 miles. So idling and short trips aren't causing this, because I hardly have any soot inside my tailpipe...much less on my bumper. I do however fill my truck up at only Chevron or Shell. No cheap stuff for my baby.

I have some soot around the edge of the pipe, but not up the pipe and onto the bumper (from what I can see, it's dirty). I don't think I have as much as the OP though. My driving consists mostly of 13mile trip to/from work with 50/50 city/hwy. I'm heavy on the throttle alot of times but I do give it a few minutes to warm up in the morning before I head out.

I'm not seeing an issue there. There are cats on the truck not particulate filters and the truck does not run stoich all the time. Have fun and wash your truck for gods sake.:D
